QuikTrip provides a quick fix for those on the go. QuikTrip (QT) owns and operates more than 615 gasoline/convenience stores in nearly a dozen, mostly in the central US. QT stores, which average 4,600 sq. ft., feature the company's own QT brand of gas and diesel fuel, as well as brand-name beverages, candy, and tobacco, and QT's Quik 'n Tasty and HOTZI lines of sandwiches. QT's 15-plus travel centers offer scales, food, fuel, showers, and other services for truckers. The firm's FleetMaster program offers commercial trucking companies detailed reports showing drivers' product purchases, amounts spent, and odometer readings. QT was co-founded in 1958 by chairman Chester Cadieux. His son Chet runs the firm.
QuikTrip supplies its retail stores with food from its QT Distribution (QTD) subsidiary. More than 70% of the food products sold at QT stores are delivered by QTD, which has warehouses in Arizona, Georgia, and Phoenix.
Tulsa-based QuikTrip operates convenience stores in Arizona, the Carolinas, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Texas, and Oklahoma. Its largest market is Atlanta, home to more than 120 of its 600-plus stores. From its strong base there, fast-growing QuikTrip is expanding into the Carolinas and beyond.
Gasoline accounted for more than half of QuikTrip's $10 billion in fiscal 2012 (ends April) sales. Due to the low margins on fuel sales, QuikTrip relies on pumping lots of gas and on indoor sales to fill its coffers. (On average, a QuikTrip store has 14 to 16 pumps per location to minimize wait time.)
QuikTrip is pursuing an aggressive growth strategy, adding 20 locations between December 2010 and December 2011, for a 3.7% increase in store count. (In 2011, it sold off five convenience stores located in the Springfield, Missouri, metropolitan area to competitor Casey's General Stores.) In 2012 it plans to up the bar, adding stores in the South and Midwest, including growing central Iowa, and the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where it currently operates more than 80 locations. Most of the new stores conform to the company's "Gen 3" format, the chain's newest store design. Gen 3 stores are larger than older QuikTrip stores, have multiple entrances, and offer outdoor seating. To drive indoor sales, QuikTrip, like many other convenience store operators, has turned to food (to make up for declining tobacco sales). After launching QT Kitchens in the mid-2000s, the venture operates five commissaries (in Atlanta, Dallas, Kansas City, Phoenix, and Tulsa) that serve all of the company's stores.more »

Transportation titan Norfolk Southern is the one big train that could. Its main subsidiary, Norfolk Southern Railway, transports freight over a network consisting of about 20,000 route miles in 20+ states in the eastern, southeastern, and Midwestern US and in Ontario and Quebec. The rail system is made up of more than 15,000 route miles owned by Norfolk Southern and nearly 5,000 route miles of trackage rights, which allow the company to use tracks owned by other railroads. Norfolk Southern transports coal and general merchandise, including automotive products and chemicals. It also offers intermodal services (freight transportation by a combination of train and truck) through its Triple Crown Services unit.
Norfolk Southern reports through three segments: General Merchandise, Coal, and Intermodal. General Merchandise accounts for 50% of the company's revenue. The segment is subdivided into five commodity groups: Agriculture/Consumer/Government (such commodities and products as soybeans, wheat, beverages, canned goods, ethanol, and military items); Chemicals (sulfur, petroleum products, plastics, among others); Metals/Construction (steel, aluminum, cement, bricks, etc); Automotive (finished vehicles from and auto parts for such auto OEMs as Ford, General Motors, and Toyota); and Paper/Clay/Forest (lumber and wood products, pulp board and paper products, wood fibers, wood pulp, scrap paper, and clay). The General Merchandise segment carried about 120 million tons on more than 2 million railroad carloads in 2011.
Coal is Norfolk Southern's single largest commodity group, accounting for 31% of revenue. The company carried about 178 million tons of coal in 2011, originating from major coal basins and destined for more than 100 coal generation plants as well as export, metallurgical, and industrial facilities. Operating in the eastern US, Intermodal carried more than 3 million units in 2011 for such clients as intermodal marketing companies, international steamship lines, and truckers.
Norfolk Southern's revenue rose 17% in 2011 compared with 2010 thanks mainly to higher revenue per unit in response to more consumer demand. General Merchandise revenue increased 12% in 2011 compared with 2010 as the result of higher rates and fuel surcharges. Within General Merchandise, the commodity group of Agriculture/Consumer Products/Government headed up 9% in 2011 compared with 2010. Chemicals increased 5%. Metals/Construction soared 23%. Paper/Clay/Forest Products headed up 6%. These commodity groups did well mainly as a result of increased rates and fuel surcharges. Automotive surged 20% in response to more output of light vehicles in North America.
Coal rose 27% in 2011 vs. 2010 to meet more demand from the domestic and global steel production market. Intermodal revenues went up 19% in 2011 compared with 2010 behind more traffic volume and higher rates and fuel surcharges. Net income for the company as a whole surged 28% in 2011 compared with 2010 thanks mainly to a 20% jump in railway operations income and lower taxes.
Looking ahead, Coal is expected to do well in response to more exports of coal for steel production and a tight supply in Australia after flooding. Among other forecasts: Domestic metallurgical coal will struggle with less demand. Industrial coal shipments will to rise in 2012 and 2013 to meet demand from new business. Demand for utility coal will decrease as a mild winter and low natural gas prices divert need for it. Agriculture/Consumer/Government's revenues will rise in response to more demand for ethanol and animal feed.
Chemicals are expected to enjoy a healthy next few years thanks to more shipments of crude oil from the Midwest to Eastern refineries and more demand for liquefied petroleum. Metals/Construction is forecast to respond to growth in the natural gas drilling market and higher metal-related traffic volumes. Automotive is also expected to respond to higher production of light vehicles in North America.
Thanks in part to $267 million of capital funding from several states and the federal government, Norfolk Southern will continue to work on the Crescent Corridor, an intermodal route spanning 11 states from New Jersey to Louisiana. Norfolk Southern is heralding the railroad as a solution to highway congestion relief. Other expansion efforts have included the Pan Am Southern joint venture between Norfolk Southern and Pan Am Railways that is responsible for a 155-mile track between New York and Massachusetts and the MidAmerica Corridor, a partnership between NS and Canadian National Railway for sharing track between the Midwest and Southeast.more »

Baker Hughes cooks up a baker's dozen of products and services for the global petroleum market. Through its Drilling and Evaluation segment, Baker Hughes makes products and services used to drill oil and natural gas wells. Through its Completion and Production segment, the company provides equipment and services used from the completion phase through the productive life of oil and natural gas wells. It also makes bits and drilling fluids and submersible pumps. Its Industrial service segment provides equipment and services for the refining, process, and pipeline industries. Since 1944 Baker Hughes has published a weekly report that counts active drilling rigs, and which serves as a barometer for the industry.
The booming North American contract drilling market (which saw a 60% increase in oil drilling in 2011, and a growth in liquid-rich natural gas drilling in shale formations) coupled with high oil prices resulted in a major surge of revenues for Baker Hughes that year. The increased activity and income from the BJ Services acquisition lifted the company's overall net income in 2011.
The BJ Services acquisition greatly boosted the company's revenues and income in 2010, which were also enhanced by high oil prices and the rebounding global economy, which generated stronger demand for oil and gas exploration and production activities.
The company has grown through product innovation (it developed the first oil well drill bit for rock in 1909), strategic alliances, and acquisitions.
In a major industry consolidation, in 2010 Baker Hughes acquired oil field services titan BJ Services for $6.9 billion. The acquisition expanded Baker Hughes' portfolio, adding pressure pumping to its product offering, giving it a stronger platform for international growth, and the ability to better compete for large integrated project contracts in the unconventional gas and deepwater markets. In particular, the purchase strengthened the company's integrated services and expanded its reservoir capabilities.
In 2010 subsidiaries of Baker Hughes sold to Superior Energy Services the firm's Gulf of Mexico stimulation and sand control business for $55 million. Baker Hughes was required to divest the business by the Department of Justice as a condition of its purchase of BJ Services.
Expanding its presence in Canada, in 2010 Baker Hughes acquired oil field equipment supplier Tanroc. It further expanded its global footprint with the opening of an oilfield services plant in Australia in 2010, and a drill bit manufacturing facility in Saudi Arabia in 2011.
In 2012 Baker Hughes launched a new service to identify potential drilling issues before they occur by pinpointing similar case histories in real-time. Baker Hughes' WellLink Radar Remote Drilling Advisory Service has remote service engineers monitor drilling operations while its DrillEdge software looks for patterns based on similar situations where problems have occurred in previously drilled wells.more »
