The National Guard serves both state and federal governments. The difference between the Guard and other branches is that while Guard units are combat-trained and can be deployed overseas, they are just as likely to serve in their home communities—training just one weekend per month, and one two-week period each year.
During local emergencies, Guard units assist residents endangered by storms, floods, fires and other disasters. Guard companies deployed overseas may see combat, but are often found building schools and hospitals, training local peacekeepers or teaching local farmers more efficient techniques and better uses of their land.more »
WHAT IS THE U.S. ARMY MADE OF? The Army is Strong because its Soldiers are Strong. No matter what job a Soldier holds, or what rank he or she has earned, each individual plays a role in maintaining our nation’s security. More than 675,000 Solders make up today’s Army, which include 488,000 on Active Duty and 189,000 in the Army Reserve.
Because the Army is made of such a large number of Soldiers, it must be organized into units, each with its own leaders and reporting structure. Each unit—whether it’s a squad or division—was created to respond to any mission, regardless of size or complexity.
The Army is made of two major components: Active Duty and Army Reserve. Enlisted Soldiers, Noncommissioned Officers (NCOs), Warrant Officers and Commissioned Officers make up both components.more »
