A typical day at work consists of triaging patients for possible labor or labor complications. It also includes caring for patients in labor and throughout recovery, as well as pre-op, intraoperative and post-op for cesarean sections.
I learned how to successfully labor and recover patients, circulate cesarean sections, and triage patients.
We recently lost the director of women's services and have an interim director.
Morale has been low and the turn over is faster than it should be. I have been there about a year and am the person who has been there the second longest on nights. We currently have only 5 full-time night nurses.
The hardest part of the job is going to work and being afraid that we are working in unsafe conditions. I still consider myself a novice and have a lot of questions and I do not feel like there are enough experts on nights to answer questions.
The most enjoyable part of the job is getting to care for patients and their families while they experience one of the most joyful times in their lives. I am very passionate about labor and delivery and feel like there is still so much more I could learn.
