Cashier/Customer Service Representative (Former Employee), Galveston, TX – May 17, 2013
Being right across the street from the beach we were busy. It made the time go by fast since we were basically a huge surf store.

Customer Service (Current Employee), Tulsa, OK – May 13, 2013
Pros: helping customers
Cons: hours cut
Academy Sports & Outdoors has been a good job. I learned a lot about helping customers and how to deal with people. The managers were very helpful. Some of the co-workers were great and others not so great, but most kept it professional. I enjoyed helping customers the most.

A perfect job for anyone in school and very flexible with scheduling.
Customer Service/Footwear (Current Employee), Madison, TN – May 13, 2013
Pros: flexibility, nice environment, convenient location
Cons: hours can be cut, cannot work over 29 hours per week when part-time assosciate
I have worked in retail for seven years with Academy Sports and I enjoy my job. I have learned beneficial people skills and how to be organized, improved work ethic, and working well with others. The management has always been very helpful and fair in all circumstances and I am comfortable talking with them about issues and other work related topics. – more... This job is not very difficult, but if I had to choose a difficult aspect it would be dealing with all different types of people and how to maintain a level head with everyone. I am very people-friendly and I get along with everyone I have worked with and it makes my job enjoyable. I actually look forward going to my job. – less

Just an okay place to be.
Sales Associate (Current Employee), Dothan, AL – May 10, 2013
Depending on the day and attitude of the management staff with make the day good or bad, the management shows favoritism to certain employees as same race or friends.

Decently fast paced, great co-workers.
Footwear Associate (Former Employee), San Antonio, TX – May 10, 2013
Pros: get to walk around, not staying stationary all day.
Cons: breaks are issued only in working 7 hours or more.
Customer service, stocking, maintaining the appearance and quality of the department. Occasional rough customers but at the end of the day usually ended decently.

A major amount of knowledge about footwear products and customer service skills.

Management is pretty good, the last manager that was place in the footwear department before I left was not – more... reasonable and would lie a lot.

Co-workers were awesome, great to talk with and learn from. Helped most of the time when a major project needed to be done.

Hardest part was working for such long periods of time without any break. 7 hour work days were required to qualify for any kind of break.

Working with great people, also getting to know different customers and lifestyles. – less

Great store with awesome products, but a poor company overall
Apparel Associate (Former Employee), Tuscasloosa, Alabama – May 8, 2013
Many people love shopping at Academy where you can find the right stuff at a low price everyday which is wonderful, but being an employee is a different story. There is a lot of favoritism between management and associates. Also a total lack of respect for employee's personal life. If you are sick or have a death in your family no one cares. They expect – more... you to get over it and come to work. Many of the employees there are college students and at times management was unwilling to work with a student's availabiltiy. Other than all the bad there was plenty of good there as well. I enjoyed working with my co-workers we all made the bad days turn into good days no matter if we were dealing with a rude customer or whatever else came our way. I think working in retail is something that everyone should experience, You learn a lot about how stores operate and the marketing aspect of things also. After working in retail it will change the way you shop. Being that I know how it feels to be the person who has to pick up behind a customer and constantly refold things, I try my best to put things back in the proper place when shopping and just overall respect the store and the employees. – less

Stocker (Former Employee), Oklahoma City, OK – May 7, 2013
Pros: good benefits
Cons: short breaks
Worked over night, managers were very nice, learned how to stock shelves and stack pallets. All co-workers were extremely friendly. The hardest part of the job was staying up working over night. I enjoyed working with other employees and helping customers. It was a very fun place to work.

Overall Academy was very diverse and a great and fun place to work.
Cashier/Customer Service Rep (Current Employee), N Richland Hills, TX – May 5, 2013
Pros: hour lunch
Cons: closing
A typical day at Academy is pretty slow but great customers. I learned how to use an assembly and printer. The management was great. All the managers had great attitudes and were very understanding. Also my co workers were nice, friendly, and very helpful. Nothing at my job was hard. I think i caught on real quick and was ready to work everyday. I most – more... enjoyed having all different types of customers. They all had different backgrounds and was really easy to talk to and make conversation. – less

Sales Associate/ Apparel (Former Employee), Mobile, AL – May 5, 2013
Pros: fashion
Cons: no benefits
I worked 12 hour days. I learned to multi-task, having to work on my on. My district manager came in twice a month for maybe two hours for a quick walk through. The hardest part of my job is that I gave 110% with no thankyou. The most enjoyable part were the customers.

Fun Place to work at
Customer Service Associate (Current Employee), El Paso, TX – May 2, 2013
A typical day would star by entering the store to be greeted by the co-workers, then leave my stuff at the locker and continue to clock in. I would walk to my department while saying hi and asking customers if they need assistance. Once in my department i would look at the action list to see what my duties for my shift would be
