Aerogroup International wants ladies to feel like they're walking on air or, at least, feel like buying a pair of its Aerosoles. The company designs and peddles women's footwear sold under the Aerosoles, What's What, A2, Aerology, Sole A, and Flexation brands. Aerogroup's shoes are sold in more than 100 Aerosoles stores in the US, located mostly in New York and California, and abroad. The shoe maker also sells shoes by catalog, website, and through thousands of department and specialty stores (such as Kohl's, Macy's, and Boscov's). Originally a division of Kenneth Cole, CEO Jules Schneider got together a group of investors and took the business private in 1987.
To raise the design quotient of its comfort-minded shoes, Aerogroup recruited Ashley Dearborn Windsor, founder of her own eponymous shoe brand, as its fashion director in 2008. Windsor has been collaborating with the firm to incorporate more color, new materials, and trendier styles into the Aerosoles lineup. With fresher designs, Aerogroup's consumer base is expanding past 40- and 50-something women. The brand has also been helped by appearances on TV programs popular with women, like Sex and the City.
The company raised its retail and style profile with the openings of flagship stores in Milan, Italy, and New York's artsy Soho neighborhood. Its overseas footprint, which is growing, includes stores in Europe, the Middle East, and the Asia/Pacific region. – less
