I have worked for Aetna for 7 years. The company has scaled back on rewarding employees, as has most companies.
Plan Coordination Consultant (Current Employee), Hartford, CTMay 27, 2014
I worked in the Plan Sponsor Services department. The atmosphere is laidback, however, management will be on you to get work done when necessary. Some of the processes are out of date and are not efficient for everyone. Overall good company. Frequent layoffs and mandatory OT.

Pros: loved the job, culture, management support

Pros: work from home, work with people from all over the world
Cons: lack of communication, feedback, direction, collaboration
I work on a diverse team all remotely located
-self managment and discipline to meet deadlines and work independetly and manage remote resources
- taking lead and being very persistent is necessary to keep decentralized assets ready when needed
- difficult collaborating or brainstorming together, so much volume so little collaboration

Lots of advancement opportunities and room for growth
Provider Data Services Analyst (Former Employee), Hartford, CTMay 10, 2014
Pros: culture
Cons: job stability
Aetna was a great company to work for. Most departments allow telecommuting. The pay is decent, although the benefits are mediocre. Lots of training is offered, as well as growth and advancement opportunities. The biggest negative is there is no job stability.

Medicare CSR-Very Stressful By Design
Medicare CSR (Former Employee), New Albany OhioMay 7, 2014
Pros: excellent initial training.
Cons: unhealthy work environment, extremely stressful, blatant favoritism
Excellent training program with good benefits and solid trainers. Once you graduate, the gloves come off. The job is extremely stressful due to the overwhelming mix of company and Medicare rules and procedures that must be followed. Nervous breakdowns and heart attacks are common events there.

Extreme prejudice by management favoring younger minority – more... employees over older, caucasian, male, or heterosexual employees. Favorited employees are regularly excused from taking phone calls to attend special training, minority club meetings, or to work on "special projects". Their workload is then dumped upon the non-favorite employees who must "take up the slack", increasing job stress.

Customer service reps are expected to work through their scheduled breaks and lunch period if on a call, but then are penalized for taking break off-schedule. PTO use is based upon a "favorites first" basis.

The company rules and audit system are designed to prevent employee promotion and/or transfer out of the department, but are enforced selectively and maliciously to punish non-favorite employees to leave.

New company rules are introduced without much forethought, then just as capriciously discarded. Rules involving attendance, tardiness and zero cell phone usage are flagrantly ignored by supervisors on preferential basis. – less

An old style company that is trying to remake itself.
Vice president (Former Employee), Hartford, CTMay 2, 2014
Leadership is in a state of flux with all the changes taking place in healthcare. May or may not be able to adapt from being a 100 plus year insurance company to changes in the marketplace.
