Good, upbeat, productive office
Administrative Assistant (Former Employee) –  Waller, TXMay 8, 2017
Very busy, upbeat work atmosphere, very professional people even though this is an oil & gas product company, which was refreshing. It is very important in this company to be friendly, but not ever lose your professionalism in communications with co-workers. They really listen and scrutinize. Also, no matter how much time pressure you are under, double check your work because very few mistakes are tolerated, and once something is "in print" that impression of you cannot be undone easily.
Pros
Great hours

Principal Engineer (Current Employee) –  Houston, TXApril 30, 2017
the professional work is in my specialty. all the design works are per ASME/API or DNV/NORSOK specs.
Only thing bad is the current oil/gas market that causes massive layoff.

Opportunities for cross training.
Opportunities for career development.

Depending on country and department location atmosphere and culture has strong differences.Upper management turn over created unstable work place changes but the oil and gas industry was likewise unpredictable during these changes.

Overall enjoyable workplace.

Great company overall
Electrical Engineer I (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXApril 24, 2017
great place to work, people were nice and helpful. The O&G industry is struggling now and it showed in their culture. The company took on a whole new system for arranging business units every 6 months, and in between that time, it was straightening out all of the processes and systems from the last restructure.
Pros
relaxed work environment, great work/life balance
Cons
re-structured too often to "improve the company", lack of management focus

Weight Manager and installation methods engineer (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXApril 12, 2017
Being a Norwegian based company, Aker brings to the workplace an obvious concern for all employee's work/family balance. Senior staff gave all employees the feeling of belonging to a business that cared. Technical challenges were rewarding. Co-workers were excellent.

Designer (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXApril 11, 2017
Aker pays well and allows most employees to grow and thrive, but they have had very little success at growing the company or sustaining its market share on its best products. Lots of favoritism and whatever status you are branded with youu must live with forever!

Lifecycle Service Engineer - SLS (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXApril 6, 2017
There are a lot of pros working for Aker. They have great career opportunities, a never ending supply of interesting work, competitive compensation, wonderful benefits, great people, wonderful training programs, a tremendous number of brilliant professionals in their fields ready to help, and great core values.

Cons

This is not an opportunity for those that do not want to work. At Aker everyone has a load of work to do and often times under very tight customer time lines. It is a challenge that I enjoy but many might find it stressful.
Pros
the place was very relaxed
Cons
poor management

Interesting job but organizational structure constantly changes. Flexible for work/life balance as long as work is done on time. Diverse workforce but not a lot of institutional training.

Aker Philadelphia shipyard is a good place to work if you are working for the yard directly. contractors are not treated as well as the union employees . But all in all the yard and facility is practically brand new

Account Analyst (Former Employee) –  Houston, TXJanuary 30, 2017
Aker was a fantastic place to work. I gained lots of support and mentoring from many of the employees including management during my short stay at Aker. Getting laid off from Aker was a tough pill to swallow, I really saw my career finishing up with Aker and advancing to the highest level possible for me. However; the knowledge I gained from being employed at Aker is something that I will always be thankful for throughout my life time.
