About Alexza Pharmaceuticals

Alexza Pharmaceuticals, a specialty pharmaceutical company located in Mountain View, California, leads the way in providing non-invasive, novel therapies for the acute treatment of central nervous system conditions. Our product candidates are based on our proprietary technology, the Staccato® system. The Staccato system vaporizes drugs to form a condensation aerosol that, when inhaled, allows for rapid systemic drug delivery. Because of the particle size of the aerosol, the drug is quickly absorbed through the deep lung into the bloodstream, providing speed of therapeutic onset that is comparable to intravenous administration but with greater ease, patient comfort, and convenience. Our first product, Staccato loxapine, (known commercially as ADASUVE®) has been approved for marketing in the United States and in the European Union. We also have a pipeline of product candidates based on the Staccato system which are in various stages of development in the CNS arena.

Alexza Pharmaceuticals is one of many successful companies founded by a leading pioneer and preeminent entrepreneur of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, Dr. Alejandro Zaffaroni. The legacy of the companies founded by Dr. Zaffaroni has truly left an indelible, positive mark, and a lasting impact on society.

Research Assistant, Mountain View, CA - August 13, 2014
Working at Alexza Pharmaceuticals taught me so much more about lab than any other class I took in school. Every day, I was working with a different machine, running different experiments, and analyzing different results. I was constantly learning new ways to retrieve data and various methods to manipulate organic compounds. Alexza Pharmaceuticals dedicates its research into aerosol technology. Through the use of a heat package and an inhaler-like device, patients can take in a dose of a drug with just a normal breath. My supervisor is a brilliant and patient individual who walked me through how to coat heat packages with a specific layer of drug, how to synthesize organic salts in order to crystallize a drug for coating, how to test if the drug could be vaporized, and how well the drug could be inhaled through a model that simulated actual lungs. For me, the hardest part of the job was keeping track of all the different tests I would be running. Some days I would work with one drug, like diphenhydramine, and another day, I would work with Ketamine. But being so busy kept me on my toes and only broadened my scientific knowledge. The best part of my job was presenting my results to my group and getting the acknowledgement that I did my calculations and analysis correctly. Running the machines is simple, but it was how I read the data that was the most difficult, so working at Alexza Pharmaceuticals has greatly honed my data analysis skills.
