Alpheus Communications provides long-haul telecommunications transport services in metro markets across Texas. The company operates a broadband backbone network that stretches from Wichita Falls to the Rio Grande Valley. It offers gigabit Ethernet, metro transport, managed wavelength, and colocation services. Alpheus also provides point-to-point private line services. The company targets telecom carriers and enterprise customers in the banking, energy, health care, IT, and legal sectors. Alpheus is a joint venture between El Paso Corporation and private equity firm Genesis Park. In late 2011 The Gores Group bought Alpheus for an undisclosed amount.
The Gores Group plans to merge Alpheus with another portfolio holding, First Communications, which operates a network in the Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic states.
Prior to the acquisition, Alpheus bought sections of fiber optic network in the Dallas/Fort Worth area from FiberLight in 2011 to boost its capacity in growing metropolitan areas where demand for broadband Internet connectivity is on the rise.
In 2007 Alpheus acquired Dallas-based Aspen Communications, a provider of IT facilities for colocation, hosting, and direct Internet access primarily for business customers. The acquisition boosted the firm's disaster recovery, hosting, and back-up operational offerings. – less
