Job Corps is the nation's oldest residential, educational and training program for young adults. Originally formed in 1964 under the Office of Economic Opportunity, it has successfully trained more than 2.0 million young people. Job corps is divided into six regions, each made up of several states. There are more than 120 campuses nationwide, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Job is operated as a public-private partnership. The government provides facilities and equipment for the Centers. Private companies, and several other federal agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service, Parks Service, Bureau of Reclamation and Fish and Wildlife, contract with the Department of Labor to operate the Centers, recruit young men and women and provide job placement services.

A unique approach, integrating academic, vocational and social skills training in a residential program, is employed. This gives young people a chance to change their lives and obtain realistic work experience and life skills. Active employer involvement in center training is also key to ensuring that students receive the work-related training needed to become competitive in the marketplace.
