Do you work at American Cancer Society? How did you find the job? How did you get that first interview? Any advice for someone trying to get in?

Every business has it's own style. What is the office environment and culture like at American Cancer Society? Are people dressed in business casual, jeans and t-shirts, or full-on suits? Do folks get together for Friday happy hours and friendly get-togethers? What is a typical day in the life of an employee at American Cancer Society?

It's not as easy as it may seem to get hired on by this organization, I found that my past skills simply did not cut it for the Donations Specialist position recently advertised. I got in easy enough for an interview and was told that they were hiring 10 people now and 10 in December. I felt that I had a good shot, as my past experience involves lots of phone work, speaking with the public, customer service, etc. I even have decent computer skills, but wait...it had been years since I used those skills in an actual job (too busy trying to save my life for the past 5 years or so) and I didn't have specific "call center" experience, which is not mentioned, albeit I do know Word, Excell and Power Point. I didn't impress this enough on the interviewer, who wanted to know how I'd used my computer skills in a recent application. ????? Not! I didn't think saying that I used it from home would do any good, so I hoped the other skills and experience would carry it's weight. I got the "rejection e-mail" today. Whatever happened to good old fashioned rejection letters or phone calls? Actually, I have never gotten one of those and I have gotten all but 2 jobs that I applied for and that was with many other applicants applying for the same position, and only one position available. How did I miss out on being one of 10?? I asked why I didn't get the position (by e-mail) and then even offered to learn the application,in my own time at their facility (basically, donating my own time) to be hired in the December batch. No go. I was told to find a job to learn the applications and then try for a job sometime at the ACS. I had to write again to ask what KIND of application and found it is a specific call center application, not mentioned in the ad for the job, on the ACS site or here. So I guess all the applicants but me had call center experience. Ah well, I'll search elsewhere now.

It's always hard to know what to expect when going in for that interview -- and preparation can make all the difference. What is the interview process like at American Cancer Society? Any advice on striking the right note?

What do you think -- is this company going to survive and thrive? Are they looking to expand their staff, or do you think layoffs are inevitable? How does American Cancer Society stack up against the competition?
