American HomePatient is making sure no one is home alone when it comes to health care. American HomePatient provides home health services from some 250 locations in the US. The company provides respiratory therapy and equipment, including oxygen therapy, sleep apnea systems, and nebulizers. It also offers home infusion therapy services, including feeding and intravenous drug administration. American HomePatient also rents and sells durable hospital equipment, including beds and wheelchairs. Mostly it operates independently, but also provides home care in a few areas through joint ventures with hospitals. Founded in 1983, American HomePatient is owned by funds of investment firm Highland Capital Management.
Change in Company Type
After multiple efforts to cut costs and pay down debts, in September 2010 the company announced an agreement with its creditors and Highland Capital Management to restructure its debt obligations (thereby avoiding bankruptcy) and become entirely owned by Highland -- a deal that took the company private. Previously, Highland Capital owned 48% of the company.
American HomePatient is one of the nation's largest and most comprehensive respiratory and service providers to Medicare and Managed Care patients with operations in 30-plus states. The company has taken steps to focus on providing in-home respiratory services and exit the home infusion therapy business. To this end, it sold its Rochester, New York home infusion location to Upstate HomeCare in 2011. The company also recently opened a new call center in Longview, Texas, to provide telephone support for monitoring patient support.
