Pros: the trust that my directors had in my ability to get the job done.
Cons: having to wait for some team members to get up to speed.
My year as a VISTA was a never-to-be-forgotten experience! I learned new skills, met terrific people, and made a difference in a distressed community.
-I helped produce a radio talk show and was a guest several times as well.
-I coordinated filming the radio show, processing the footage, and ensured delivery of videos to the TV station for broadcast on cable.
-As part of my on-going duties, I produced informational videos promoting tourism, Public Service Announcements, and instructional training videos. Many of these were broadcast on local TV.
-My experience in Graphic Design, Newsletter Editing, and MS Publisher enabled me to create multiple press releases, brochures, programs, and other printed materials.
-Having more than 5 years experience in Customer Service formed a foundation of strong interpersonal success conducting presentations, meetings, and leadership training.
-My Master's Degree in Instructional Design was utilized to create step-by-step easy-to-follow training for Project Management, Leadership Development, video editing, and other software functions.
My on-site management team was fantastic in that they conducted initial orientation, evaluated my skills, and then trusted me to do the job I enlisted to do. They were not disappointed!
Many of my co-workers were volunteers so needed different motivation than the paid employees. I learned how to finesse reaching goals working with both types of co-workers. This is an invaluable skill to possess.
I think that the hardest part of the job was having to wait for team members to get up to speed. I am a mover-and-shaker – more... and like to move along at a healthy pace. Fortunately, I also successfully multi-task and happily filled the lag time with other timely projects.
The most enjoyable part of the job was being part of an effective team. I liked the brain-storming sessions, the professional development seminars that the team attended, and conferring with local and regional officials, politicians, and business owners. I loved the creativity that my directors allowed me and I made sure that I surpassed their expectations. – less
