Windows of opportunity abound for Andersen, a maker of wood-clad windows and patio doors in North America. Andersen offers window designs from hinged, bay, and double-hung to skylight, gliding, and picture windows. Its Renewal by Andersen subsidiary provides start-to-finish window renewal services in more than 100 markets in the US. Anderson Storm Doors makes storm and screen doors. Through independent and company-owned distributorships (including its Andersen Logistics division), Andersen sells to homeowners, architects, builders, designers, and remodelers. The company, which builds some 12 million doors and windows each year at more than 15 factories, is owned by the Andersen family and company employees.
Other Andersen units include Silver Line Building Products, which manufactures vinyl windows and patio doors in North America, and American Craftsman, which offers vinyl windows and doors exclusively through Home Depot retail locations.
As with other companies in the building materials business, Andersen was hurt by the housing construction slump and general economic recession. Sales and profits slumped and for the first time since The Great Depression, employees in 2009 and 2010 were not given annual profit sharing checks. In 2011 Andersen sharpened focus on its core business and sold Aspen Research to an investor group. Aspen provides third-party research and lab testing for materials development. – less
