The typical workday in the HR world is not at all typical. This is what I enjoy most about this very dynamic and multifaceted role. There are never two days the alike. Some days are focused on developing strategic goals and initiatives for HR and the rest of the organization, while other days are include policy creation, communication and enforcement. Most every workday provides some level of coaching opportunity to Managers of all levels and employees alike. It is very rewarding to coach an employee and let them come to the realization that they had the solution to their problem the whole time. Recognition for work that is well done or behaviors that support the organization's value system is essential to help ensure these behaviors are going to be sustained and/or replicated by the employee or their peers.
I've learned that communication is more than posting a notice or making an announcement. Today's employees don't want to do something because they are told to. Instead, they want to understand the "why" behind the initiative. What impact with this have on our clients, our vision and most importantly, how will this impact "me" (the employee). Effective communication takes on many forms and is shared through many mediums making it essential to really think of how best to communicate the message at hand before posting a notice on the bulletin board. You can never over-communicate.
The most enjoyable part of my job is doing meaningful work and knowing that I am having a positive impact on the organization and our employees.
