2nd Grade - 5th Grade General Educator (Current Employee), Arnold, MD Belvedere ElementaryMarch 25, 2014
Pros: healthcare.
Cons: never receiving a single pay raise.
As an educator I have had to micro-manage many tasks. This profession has challenged me in a multitude of ways such as working with co-workers who were very productive verses unproductive. Working and appeasing administrators who were both reasonable and un-reasonable. I learned how to deal with adversity at it's highest level without losing the faith – more... and assurance of the administrator that I was under. I have also learned how to juggle many different initiatives and mandated tasks as an educator that have allowed me to expand my work ethic beyond a basic level. The hardest part of the job is finding the time to complete all tasks that were presented in front of me, but with time management I learned how to complete it all in a day. The most enjoyable part of the job is completing the task in the given timeframe. – less

You're an educational mercenary. It can rock, or it can suck. Show up telling yourself that a day's work is two weeks' worth of gas, and you'll be fine. And don't go to Annapolis Middle or Meade.

Not one the greatest school districts to work.
Teacher Assistant (Current Employee), West county areaOctober 2, 2013
Pros: benefits, summers off, breaks
Cons: pay, pay!!! nepotism and favoritism
Teacher Assistants are paid way lower than other counties in MD. It is hard to grow with the company, they have a lot of nepotism going on. HR is unfair and hire their own family members and friends. People with no degrees or lower degrees make more than people with higher level degrees and experience and when questioned you are administratively transferred! – more... Most everyone at the Board of Education in Annapolis is related or have known of each other! Sucks!

My specific school is ok. Principal acts understanding and is flexible. But the counselor does nothing but acts busy and dumps her work on everyone else. The TA's are just babysitters.

Time to move on. – less

A great place to work and grow professionally. Co-workers are cooperative, parents are friendly and the kids, the most valuable part of the learning community, are just wonderful.
Kids are brought up to be knowledgeable, positive thinkers, positive risk takers, inquirers etc. I identify with the school's vision and mission as I am an advocate for global – more... citizenship, peace and restorative justice in schools. – less

Stressful envirommemt at times, but productive workplace.
Student Advocate (Current Employee), Annapolis, MDAugust 28, 2013
Pros: great healthcare benefits, excellent time schedule, great supervisor and staff.
Cons: can't really complain.
My day start at 6:55 am. My first assignment is bus duty, assuring students exit bus and enter building in ample time. Also to keep vehicles from arriving in the bus lane.
During the course of the day I help students find their class and direct them to the appropriate staff. My job also is to remove a disruptive student from class and escort them to – more... the office or the room used for detention. – less

Teachers Assistant (Current Employee), MDJuly 17, 2013
The day isn't a long one depending on what position you hold, but it can be very tiring since it is working with children. The hardest part of the job is the unruly children, those one or two children who end up making your day miserable and the parents who act like it isn't a problem. The most enjoyable part of the job is the majority of the student – more... who are wonderful and really enjoy school. – less

Teacher (Former Employee), Glen Burnie MDJuly 11, 2013
Unfortunately, I think public schools have taken a turn for the worse with all the governmental laws now. Meeting AYP and having students pass state required tests were more important than actual teaching and behavior management.

not a great place to work if you're a custodian
custodian (Current Employee), aa county schoolMarch 14, 2013
Pros: pay is ok, good health care benefits.
Cons: culture, stress, too many rules, they could care less about us.
-too much work to do daily and not enough help. we need more help. temps.

-too many rules, regulations, bureaucracy. no room from creativity. the mindset/culture here is horrible. micromanaged.

-you must follow the manual here. do things the way we've done them for 50 years. without exception! we are humans not robots! throw out the manual.

- the – more... list of things you are not allowed to do is very long. longer than the list of allowed things you can do.

-managers and bosses are overly demanding. it's their way or the highway.

--Quickly and often managers tell you when you did something wrong, but rarely mention things you’ve done well.

-the status quo is the standard here.

-instead of fixing problems or finding solutions, everyone spends their time making sure they don't get blamed for things.

-they give you vacation and sick leave but get mad when you want to use it. taking off makes the cleaning crews short handed, so they look down upon you taking days off. days that they gave you or rather, you EARNED.

-Custodians are working beyond our limits on most days just trying to get everything done (large unrealistic work loads), and management keeps demanding and expecting MORE. This creates LOTS of STRESS. We are people not machines. Take steps to reduce our work loads, not add to it! – less

Special Education Teacher (Former Employee), Annapolis, MDMarch 10, 2013
Greet students as they arrive to begin a new day on their job of learning new things. Respecting students you become respected and cooperation from them so your day is a success. Some co-workers are their for a paycheck but, others are passionate to teach others and are supportive. Every year a new lesson plan book must be written. Love for the students – more... and their ability to want to know more. Share what you have and pass it on to others so that they will progress and contribute to society. – less

Professional development is eminent
Teacher- Annapolis High School (Former Employee), Annapolis, MDNovember 20, 2012
Pros: educators have the ability to develop and health benefits are god
Cons: demand on teachers is a lot, there's little time for rest.
This is a good place to work if one really wants to become a leader in education. Professional development is very prominent and educators have the opportunity to study from a number of cohort colleges. Educators have a lot to accomplish and the demand on ones time is really intense but new teachers get a lot of support. Teachers and administrators – more... alike have a lot of behavior issues to manage especially in my particular school. Besides that, it is a very wonderful place to work as students, teachers and administrators coexist in a friendly and safe atmosphere. – less
