TITLE: Collections Specialist FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

DEPARTMENT: Business Office

REPORTS TO: Business Services Supervisor

POSITION NARRATIVE: The Collections Specialist is responsible for managing aging patient accounts, resolving billing questions and problems, determining payment arrangements and schedules, interacting with collection agency and dealing with difficult patients regarding collections.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responds timely to all incoming correspondence, resolves patient billing questions/problems, and communicates possible problems with department manager.
  • Manages aging patient accounts.
  • Responds to patients’ questions on payments arrangements.
  • Determines patient payment arrangements and executes payment agreements.
  • Interacts with collection agency.
  • Responds to difficult patients regarding collection issues.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:

  • Skills: Strong customer service, written & verbal communication, word processing and spreadsheet skills. 10-key by touch and typing 35wpm.
  • Knowledge: Insurance billing procedures and collection laws. Knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-9, and CPT codes.
  • Abilities: Ability to work effectively with patients and co-workers, prioritize tasks, identify collection problems, work independently, meet deadlines, and prepare records in accordance with detailed instructions.

REQUIREMENTS: High School diploma or GED required. College level courses preferred. Two years patient service experience in a health care organization, preferably in insurance billing and accounts receivable.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to sit, grasp and use hand/wrist repetitions. The employee must frequently conduct data entry, reach, use manual dexterity, and occasionally stand, walk, twist, bend, squat/kneel, push, and lift up to 25lbs. Specific vision required by the job includes close eye work, normal color discrimination, reading computer screens and books, and normal hearing.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Arch Health Partners maintains a drug free workplace, and smoke free working environment. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the campus. Employees are required to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen.

This position works in a well-lit, air-conditioned, cubicle, office setting with moderate noise level. This position is not exposed to hazardous materials, radiation, and loud/repetitive noise. Personal protective equipment is not required.
