Here's one of the top names in meat. John Morrell & Co. is a leading producer of processed-meat and fresh-pork products. It makes bacon, fresh pork, hams, and sausage, as well as cold cuts and lunch meats, hot dogs and deli meats. The company's brands include E-Z-Cut, Farmers Hickory, and its flagship John Morrell banner. Most of its products are sold – more... through supermarkets and other retail grocers. John Morrell also sells pork products to convenience stores, foodservice suppliers, restaurants, and other customers in the hospitality industry. Tracing its roots to the UK, where it was founded in 1827, John Morrell is a subsidiary of top US pork producer Smithfield Foods.

In 2010 Morrell's oldest and least efficient processing plant was shut down in Sioux City, Iowa, laying off some 1,450 workers. That year it also streamlined its operations by combining its fresh pork sales with that of another Smithfield subsidiary, Farmland Foods, in an effort to reduce costs. Turning to its ancillary operations, in 2010 Morrell acquired a 49% interest in Premium Pet Health, bringing its ownership of Premium to 100%. Premium Pet is a meat by-product processor that supplies pet-food manufacturers in the US. – less
