Family-owned Art Van Furniture works to be friendly to family budgets. As Michigan's #1 furniture seller, it offers moderately-priced home furniture and bedding through about 35 stores across the Great Lakes State. Art Van Furniture is building its first store in Ohio, set to debut in summer 2013. The chain, which sells mattresses through five freestanding PureSleep shops, also sells more upscale furniture marketed under brands Sealy, Simmons, and Broyhill. Known for its aggressive sales and service, the furniture retailer boasts perks such as children's play areas. Chairman Art Van Elslander, who has 10 children (some active in the business), founded the firm with an East Detroit store in 1959.
Art Van Furniture's business is concentrated in Michigan, where it operates through nearly 35 furniture stores plus a handful of mattress outlets. In mid-2013 it plans to open a 90,000-sq.-ft. furniture showroom in Springfield Township, Ohio, as well as four PureSleep stores across the Toledo area.
The furniture retailer maintains a fleet of 400 service and delivery vehicles. It operates both furniture and mattress stores in Michigan and soon in Ohio.
To spur sales as new competitors -- such as discounter Target, warehouse club operator Costco Wholesale, and Crate & Barrel -- enter the market and gain their share of the furniture market, Art Van Furniture has responded by focusing on mattress retailing. The company's first PureSleep bedding-only stores opened in late 2010. The retailer has five PureSleep stores in Michigan and four more in development in a new market, Ohio.
