Lacking leadership, vision and direction with poor culture. Would not recommend this company. Constantly changing direction and CIO does not allow employees to make their own decisions. Very micro managed environment, and leadership that can not be trusted.

People are very committed. However, management is not able to provide leadership. Decisions are reviewed by team members but with so many cooks the outcome is unacceptable and fingers are pointed at the one who makes the least noise.

Management needs to be more in power and stick their policy instead changing colors like a cameleon.

This is an awesome company to work for. Their are multitudes of benefits to being an employee of NASM or it's parent company Ascend Learning if and only if you're able to get into any other Dept. other than Member Services. It could be a wonderful Dept. as well if it weren't for the mis-management of we'll call her for the purpose of this review, "Ms. B". She is the only person in the entire company bold enough to believe that Ascend Learning Policies & Culture do not apply to her and therefore her Dept. is a miserable place to be and employees are left to feel that themselves and more importantly their families health is the last thing on Ms. B's list of priorities and she will be the first one to tell you this straight to your face during her frequently used, "Rotten Apple Speech," while she point blank reminds you daily that, "you are very replaceable."

Ascend Learning housed ATI Nursing Education, which created e-learning based state board of Nursing high stakes test preparation and review studies. I would work with Faculty on Curriculum Integration of these Nursing Education Programs. The most difficult problems I encountered in this position occurred when Faculty were unmotivated to learn new skills. I have achieved success in converting even the toughest Faculty, given that the students excel when the faculty believe in these products and services.

I had lost my job due to my own mental health issues that were neglected as a child. I loved the job, but was never given a chance to take care of the issues then return. My boss was not easy to communicate with.

The daily routine consisted of reviewing and responding to approximately 30 to 50 emails from Education Institution Faculty and Internal Sales Education Specialists. Emails included but were not limited to: fulfillment of educational materials and testing for shipment, testing issues and website issues needing resolve, website navigation requests, analyzing spreadsheet data in regards to class counts and sales numbers. Daily meetings with management and or Educational Sales Specialists.

Assessment Technologies had a great reputation with strong retention and great bonuses. New executive were hired and ATI was rename Ascend Learning. Frequent hiring followed by layoffs, out of control spending, and rumors of kickbacks to top execs. Very high turnover. Went through 3 programming teams in less than 2 years. Most of the talent has left the company.

Maintained both Executive’s calendar; schedule conference room reservations for strategy sessions. Review, reconcile and submit expense reports. Coordinate travel arrangements (airfares, rental cars, hotels). Serve as liaison between executives, team members, contractors, departments and offices.

• Promoted in May, 2012 from Executive Assistant for the Research & Development Department to Executive Assistant of the Technology & Operations Department. While Supporting the Vice President of Research & Development, also supported 1 Executive Director, 20 Developers, 11 Nurses (Content Experts), 7 Psychometricians and 8 Researchers.

• Maintained Vice President of Research & Development’s calendar, scheduled meetings, reserved conference rooms, scheduled travel, catered various meetings and events.

• Planned, coordinated and managed budget details of yearly Research & Development Summit (team meeting that included 90+ team members nationwide).

• Managed details of Item Writing Workshops involving 100+ nurses and doctors to travel to Kansas City to offer their services as content experts for Ascend’s medical educational materials.

• Coordinated recurring bi-monthly Bias Reviews for nursing educational testing materials.

• Scheduled Item Writing and Item Review meetings (approximately 6 meetings per week) to include 2 nurses (content experts), 1 Psychometrician and 1 Developer for each meeting.

Management completely out of touch with reality

Ascend Learning acquired Jones & Bartlett, and some of the changes were good: better pay, liberal sick leave and vacation policy, vastly improved location. But overall, the company is a mess, and most of the problems stem from management. My coworkers and immediate supervisor were fantastic: personally dedicated (even when receiving no recognition or reward from the company) and extremely knowledgeable.

However, the amount of new products the company plans each year is completely out of touch with staffing levels and how much an editor can do in a day. Management consistently underestimates how long a product will take to develop, despite previous experience with projects of the same size. Editors have no additional resources to turn to; you either get the job done yourself, or you get called on the carpet. Several personally and professionally dysfunctional publishers are entrenched and are considered "untouchable". Communication between editorial, production, marketing, and acquisition departments is poor, and continues to deteriorate. Editors know that reporting delays or problems only results in micromanagement and doubts about that editor's abilities, so weekly status report meetings are tense, long, and unproductive. New procedures are constantly being introduced, but never fully implemented. Employees have learned to just ignore a new procedure until it fails and goes away.

Training is inadequate, because your manager, who is expected to train you, also has a full load of projects to develop and cannot devote the time. Coworkers would be happy to help, but they're so
  more... overloaded that everyone has their head down from 8 to 6 every day, and they take work home besides, so you go a whole day and realize you haven't said good morning or good bye to a single person.

I learned a lot about various industries and about educational publishing in general at Ascend Learning, but, overall, that knowledge came with an unacceptable amount of stress and sleepless nights. Ascend Learning is one of those proudly self-described "fast-paced, high-growth companies" that fuels its profits by burning out its hardest-working employees.
