Was a great place to work

Worked for Agere, LSI, and then Avago.
Great place to work - I was a NAS/backup administrator 10 years ago, and now I am a Storage Administrator - As I added SAN to my list of skills. Quite a challenge – more... to administer and be on-call for both R&D and Production storage/backup environments.
Storage platforms were constantly changing - as the name of the company changed - so that means that I was able to stay current with the latest platforms.

Loved my manager, and co-workers.

The hardest part of the job was working for Avago - they are very streamlined - which means very little time to get the job done right - so if you are not efficient - don't try to work here. – less

Very cost/bottom line focused, currently making good money of cell phone business. Could get very nasty if that business drops off.

Cons: high schedule pressure. emails all times of day, night, weekends, holidays imply work life balance is ... well ... work.
Fantastic and intelligent coworkers. Good CAD tools and ample licenses (the usual glitches at crunch times). Good benefits and bonus. Meager salary adjustments, if any. Career advancement unlikely unless – more... you migrated from HP with "the gang."

Management fully consumed with head count and cost. No long term vision. Human Relations practically non-existent. Most projects are godfathered with impossible-to-meet schedules that management simply says "yes" to. – less

Cons: company worries about every penny but not the employee
Being an LSI employee that was bought by Avago, I don't see why anyone would work for the CEO. There seems to be a lack of respect from upper management/CEO that demands total respect/acceptance/obedience – more... from the employee. The CEO only cares about the shareholders and turning a buck. If doing something affects 100 people's livelyhood in the company, it doesn't matter as long as it makes the stock go up.

Also, Avago is following suit with a lot of other companies and closing small sites. Currently anything less than 100 seems to be on the chopping block. Based on the "main" sites, if you're less than 300, you may want to reconsider the job or consider relocating if possible. – less

The wage is more than fair and the industry is strong. Avago is one of the leaders in the semi-conductor industry and that will probably not change. The advancement opportunities are limited however and – more... the work can get stale. It is the perfect place for someone who wants to do their 40 hours a week but that's it. Probably a solid company to retire at. If you want more opportunities and to be challenged however, I have yet to see that available. – less

Get up to work twelve hour days in a hazmat suite working on only the tools you are certified in. You learn how your tool works and what it does to create the lot of wafers you put into it. Also learn – more... if your tool is out of spec and needs to be qualed or fixed. Never really see management unless they come into the fab to see how things are going or if a tool you are resposible for is broken or not running correctly. Co-workers are pretty much the same just doing their job and trying to get through the twelve hour day. Some are friendly and others don't want to talk, just trying to get through the day. Hardest part of the job is getting through the long day and trying to keep busy the whole time. The benefits and most enjoyable part of the job is to be busy the whole day, learning new tools to expand your management of tools, and the best part is however as many days you work you also get off. – less
