Management gone wrong
Systems Administrator (Former Employee) –  United StatesAugust 10, 2017
No accountability for management actions. It used to be a great place to work but management has changed it's focus and doesn't listen to it's employees. If you point out something wrong you will be ostracized for it and pushed out the door. Make no mistake about it, this is a good ole boys club / fraternity.

Not delivering on promises made to employees. Allowing managers to go unchecked for too long. Nepotism is a huge factor here. If you can get in with the right people you are set. That is at least until you are no longer of use to them. Then you are tossed like yesterday's trash.

The CEO seems to be completely oblivious to what is actually going on in his company, or simply doesn't care.

If you value your sanity look somewhere else.
Pros
Tiki bar, free beer, some company functions
Cons
Poor management, too much self boasting, no reward for hard work

Partner Sales Manager (Former Employee) –  Seattle, WAJuly 14, 2017
Very fun and supportive work environment. Great people and great product and service. The product and service offered by Avalara is a necessity for most any company that sells a product, goods, or services
Automates the entire sales tax compliance process removing the burden from a company's finance or accounting department allowing them to focus on activities that actually generate revenue for their company's bottom line.
Pros
Support from management, work-life balance
Cons

Ping Pong table was cool and beer thats about it
SALES DEVELOPMENT REPRESENTATIVE (Current Employee) –  Durham, NCJuly 12, 2017
There is minimal training. The managers are not qualified, most people that work there including managers don't have any sales experience. Sales Team is willing to hire anyone with no strong background . They show favor to the senior reps who have been there longer by giving them all the leads but yet they hold you to the same standards as soon as you start. This tell you dont stess it if you struggle you they will help you succeed yet that is a lie.The senior manager is a pretty young and cluseless the only way to stick around is if she likes you. Alot of favoritism is shown. Seems like a great job when you start then you begin to see all of the office politics especially from manager. Also parking is horrible your expected to walk almost half a mile to the parking deck. Does not recommend unless your desperate for work in between jobs .
Pros
ping pong, long breaks, beer, sales kickoff
Cons
bad management, temp job but they say its not, high turn over rate, unrealistic meterics and job requirements with the tools handed, favoritism

Partner Marketing Manager (Current Employee) –  Seattle, WAJuly 5, 2017
I recommend Avalara to anyone seeking a vivacious and inclusive company culture. While working at Avalara, I've had multiple opportunities to work beyond sales and marketing groups. Interaction with development, operations, compliance, legal, etc. is standard, giving me great exposure into understanding the full scope of the business. The offices are constantly buzzing with energy and truly bring life to the usual 9-5 desk job.
Pros
fun culture
Cons
change- however you adjust!

Think Radiohead's, "Fake Plastic Trees"
Senior Software Engineer (Former Employee) –  Durham, NCJune 3, 2017
Good ideas made long ago with initial success has allowed this company to live off VC money longer than it should. Fake, Cliquey, & sub-standard.

Talent and Software Engineers are NOT valued here to their severe detriment.

Leadership doesn't exist.

Manager's don't know how to manage.

Fast growing and it looks like it's running around with its head chopped off.

Focus on an IPO I can't see happening.

CEO is nice, has good intentions, but is in way over his head.
Pros
Kegs
Cons
Fragmented cliquey and NOT a meritocracy.

Focuses on Culture and Growth
Sales (Former Employee) –  Seattle, WAMay 31, 2017
Avalara is heavy in culture and fast paced change, however they're currently experiencing some upheaval due to growth. Lack of communication or explanation of major changes to paychecks, products, and processes hurts the environment and contributes to confusion and employee experience. That said, it is a great place to work and does offer lots of positives: time in office is flexible if necessary, and focus on having fun is high. Overall the company is great and is a good place to start a career and get paid well. It is a complex product and conversation, so beware that there is much to learn if looking to join the company.
Pros
fun culture, great place to start a career in fintech, flexible schedules
Cons
lots to learn, complex sales/product, many many changes to teams and pay that aren't communicated or fully understood

Nice Startup atmosphere, management issues
Anonymous (Former Employee) –  Seattle, WAMay 1, 2017
Culture of "tribal knowledge" in this company. You have to be prepared to learn everything on your own, you will have little to no training. Gossipy workplace atmosphere - management issues and issues with communication all around.
Company is plagued by internal bad data issues causes by lack of policy/procedures put into place, which filter all the way to the customers.
There is a good opportunity to put the right people into place and turn this company around and head in the right direction - but all of management will have to get on board instead of doing it their own way.

Inside Sales Representative (Former Employee) –  Durham, NCApril 11, 2017
Great work environment, if you can deal with it still being a new company so they are still trying to find their way. Things change daily but they do have a pool table and free beer after work for those who drink responsibly.

Software Sales Representative (Former Employee) –  Durham, NCDecember 3, 2016
Avoid the inside sales position because it's not sales, it's a call center atmosphere. The training from Team Leaders are terrible due to the fact that you are coming into the door as a Contractor. Even the permanent employees are miserable due to the constant changing and turnover rate.

GoLive (Current Employee) –  Durham, NCOctober 10, 2016
The company didnt pan out to be what was advertised. It isnt a bad company by any means. If you are looking for an opportunity for career growth, this is not the place for you. If you are just interested in a job with the potential of making decent money, then you have a chance here.
Upper management still manages as if it is a small company. That is proving to be a major issue. They truly have good intentions, but they have trouble learning from past mistakes.
Pros
Decent culture in a very strong market.
Cons
They cant seem to get out of their own way, They are always pushing for improvements but at very inopportune times.

Modern, contemporary work space with cool people who work hard.
E-file Processor (Former Employee) –  Durham, NCOctober 4, 2016
Hardest part of my job was keeping jumping from state to state when prepping returns to be filed. Every state is different and CA is the worst! Also my particular dept had to work at least 2 weekends a month, because I was a temp I didn't get a flex day during the following week to take off. So we're working straight 7 days sometimes.

Co-workers were awesome and supportive but management needs serious work with communication. Instructions for new projects/visions were not always shared with the entire group and valuable information needed to help shave time off your work load wasn't always given in a timely manner.

Most enjoyable part about my job was the location, sociable gatherings (indoor picnics, work anniversaries etc), amenities and our desks which lower or raise so you can sit or stand while you work.
Pros
Free lunches, beautiful location, modern work culture
Cons
work weekends, management's lack of communication

A good spot to visit but start looking for next job when you walk thru the door
Engineering (Current Employee) –  Seattle, WAJanuary 2, 2016
Common complaints from past and current employees is no career path (especially in IT/Technical skills). While there are a few excellent managers, most managers tend to be under skilled or over political.

A lot of prima donnas from other startups that joined for the "pending stock options" with massive promises and late incomplete delivery. (If IPO happened as soon as they were lead to believe, they would have sold and moved on quickly).

The old timers are solid fun people to work with -- they have business knowledge, sharing and caring. Unfortunately, they are slowly being "knocked off" by the new managers who want employees in their own image (especially ones more ignorant then they are). The founders appear to be disengaging from the business, leaving the venture capitalists changing corporate culture to a harsher returns-centric style.

From venture funds, they over-hired and under-delivered, so expect overwork and sudden downsizing without warning. If you are the boss's favorite, you are safe.
Pros
Good location, Tasty Tuesday, Free Lattes
Cons

Sales (Former Employee) –  SeattleAugust 11, 2015
The culture has degraded and some folks still are trying to keep it great. Tough, tough place to make a living.

Over hired, STRONG nepotism.

Still some departments w/ awesome managers, but they are rapidly leaving due to the pressure and ineffective business planning/execution.
Pros
cool people
Cons
"we won't pay for senior people, only juniors...." They eat their young.

Staff (Former Employee) –  Falls Church, VAMarch 20, 2015
Since you are expected to live at work, employees are allowed to drink on the job. The culture is one of a party atmosphere. It is the strangest place I have ever worked! Not to mention my manager was arrested for molesting children.
