Founded in August of 2009, with corporate headquarters in Manhattan, Baked by Melissa quickly became sought out for its bite-size take on the common cupcake. Baked by Melissa’s very first retail store was a walk up counter in NYC’s popular SoHo area. In the basement of that same location is where Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer, Melissa Ben-Ishay, created delicious flavors and baked round the clock. Within six months, quickly developing a tremendous following and increasing demand, the company opened up a second location in Union Square. Almost simultaneously, in February 2010, the company expanded production operations by opening up a 35,000 ft. factory and distribution center in North Bergen, New Jersey. Given the uniqueness of the brand, the culture and future opportunities, Baked by Melissa was on its way towards building something special. With Brian Bushell, Melissa’s brother, at the helm, the company set its sights on becoming a national brand.
Towards that end, in April 2010, Baked by Melissa began shipping nationwide by developing a ‘cutting edge’ e-commerce website. This innovation allowed customers from all 50 states to enjoy the sweet treats within 48 hours of ordering. Customers from all over were able to experience ‘Baked by Melissa’ and eagerly awaited the beautiful tie dye ribbon boxes that the cupcakes were packaged in. Specialty designs for birthdays, holidays, and other occasions, were soon on the horizon.
In January 2016, Baked by Melissa launched its first new product since its introduction of the cupcake, by bite-sizing another popular dessert; the macaron. This new product category was extremely significant as it marked the first step of the evolution from being a ‘bite-size cupcake’ to evolving into a ‘ bite-size dessert brand’. Tapping into another important aspect of the food landscape, a customized line of Gluten Free mini cupcakes was launched.
Almost seven years later, with much to still accomplish and look forward to, Baked by Melissa has transformed into an amazing, creative, and successful organization. The company and founders have received numerous awards and accolades, with the most recent recognition coming when Co-founders Melissa Ben-Ishay and Brian Bushell’s (CEO) became finalists for Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the year award (2016).
Currently, with over 300 employees, 14 retail locations throughout the New York City area, and a booming e-commerce business, Baked by Melissa is now a multimillion-dollar company…..with even more plans for growth and expansion. – less
