The core mission of the Banyan Montessori School, a Thai-registered preschool, is to provide a high quality education in a multicultural and supportive learning environment to children of stateless migrants from Burma. The school is self-sustaining, with tuition drawn from paying expatriate and Thai families subsidizing low-income refugee families. Founded by the Burmese Refugee Project, a 501c3 organization serving stateless Shan Burmese migrants, the Banyan Montessori School aims to build a sense of community in a beautiful ethnically and economically diverse region. We strive to equip all our students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in this increasingly globalized world.
We are currently seeking an experienced School Director/Lead Teacher with Montessori certification to oversee school and daily classroom operations. The ideal candidate will have a combination of managerial, Montessori teaching and communications experience. As a new school, we are looking for someone with initiative, drive and the ability to adapt to take an active role as part of our small leadership team. The following describes some of the primary responsibilities of the School Director/Lead Teacher position and the qualifications we feel are essential for success.


  • Plan individual and group Montessori activities
  • Guide students in the Montessori classroom
  • Be at school from 7:50 am to 4:30 pm every day
  • Evaluate and analyze each child’s progress by taking observations and filling out the student’s progress chart
  • Ensure the safety, health and hygiene of each student
  • Schedule special events, guests and field trips for students and families
  • Ensure safety and upkeep of school grounds


  • Train other staff in the Montessori method
  • Develop monthly staff evaluation forms
  • Hold monthly performance reviews with staff
  • Hire staff when needed
  • Organize and oversee volunteers to maintain school property and grounds

Finances and Documentation

  • Update finances and keep track of the accounts
  • Keep up to date with registration documents
  • File student registration information including health form, personal information, photograph permission form, copy of birth certificate/ID
  • Draft Annual Report


  • Advertise school and recruit parents through flyers, posters, open houses and web postings

Communication and Community Involvement

  • Communicate with parents and offer at least one parent-teacher conference per term
  • Distribute weekly newsletter to parents (via email or written)
  • Answer emails and phone calls
  • Plan the school calendar
  • Meet with local school board at least once a month; more often if necessary

Ideal Qualifications:

  • Have a BA in education or related field
  • Montessori certification
  • 3+ years teaching in the Montessori method
  • 3+ years managerial experience in education or related field
  • Proven budget management experience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience working and/or living abroad, ideally in Asia
  • Fluent English speaker, knowledge of Thai language is a plus
  • Enthusiastic and professional demeanor
  • Positive and energetic
