Productive - Great place for learning
Daily management (Former Employee), New York, NY – May 2, 2013
Pros: great boss
Cons: not enough team work. i am a team player - creative & always ready for new challenges.
A typical day at work - I usually came in between 7:30-8:00am reviewed and replied to my emails, globally. This task varied in time frame since some days I'd reecive requests from other branches to approve new lines, increases, decreases, cancellation, etc. and credit lines had to be reviewed prior to approving anything.

Reviewed requests from sales – more... traders for new products and had close contact with Legal to review documentation for specific product and specific clouse prior to approving.

Daily management of the country risk sanctioning system including validation of country risk exposure and coordination of limit sanctioning and approvals.

My resume details my duties.

I had a great boss, and management in general was fine.

My co-workers learned a lot from me. I have the most possitive way of thinking, professionally and personally. If we have a good team we can accompplish anything as long as we respect feach other and allow to provide ideas to better the system.

The hardest part of the job I guess was when multi tasks had a dead line.

The most enjoyable part of the job was when the multi tasks were completed, and at the end of the day I felt I had accomplished a lot. – less

Barkley's Bank is a slow paced work environment that allowed you to get your work done with no interruptions.

Highly diverse workplace with daily challenges
Event Coordinator-Central Reservationist (Current Employee), New York, NY – March 17, 2013
Pros: free beverage service, secure work location, beautiful scenery
Cons: fixing other's mistakes, unpaid overtime, unappreciation from management
On a daily basis I deal with between 50-100 events, both large and small scale, as well as ongoing projects and special requests from Barclay's executive board. I find my job highly rewarding in the sense that when an event takes place without incident or mishap, I am personally responsible for it. Having members of my organization trust me to carry – more... out their wishes is an honor. My co-workers and I work as a team, and although every day is demanding and difficult, my meticulous nature and thorough methods ensure my success, day in & out. – less

Rating of 2 = : Low morale due to consistent rounds layoffs, loss of funding for numerous projects and a heavy reliance on manual processes
VP - US Head of Operations Risk Metrics (Former Employee), New York, NY – March 15, 2013
Pros: kmowledgeable & approachable colleagues; as a first time project manager, learning a set of skills that are easily transferrable
Cons: ongoing challenge to receive level of stakeholder participation needed to meet milestone dates, lack or reliable escalation contacts
Typical day: Consistent correspondence with specific business areas within Operation to successfully deliver a series of risk metrics; focus on meeting deadlines for each phase of the project
What I learned: How to be successful in completing each project phase within agreed upon deadlines; how to manage all phase of a project required for successful – more... delivery of end product
Management: I was fortunate to have reported to supportive, approachable & extremely experienced managers during my time at Barclays
Co-workers: Approachable, friendly and intelligent with a team player mentality
Hardest part of the job: Maintaining stakeholder engagement, as support from senior management was compromised after the Global Head of Ops (original program sponsor and key point of escalation) left the firm. This subsequently led to a reduction in overall participation by most of the business lines.
Most enjoyable part of the day: Successfully utilizing the acquired skills, techniques and problem solving methodologies needed to effectively and efficiently complete each project phase; Also, daily interactions with our development & production support teams, leading to a better understanding of the technical processes that must be carried out to ensure successful metrics delivery to our clients in Operations. – less

One of the least enlightened places I have ever worked. If you are looking to develop a career or skills stick to a U.S. based bank.
Associate Director Finance (Current Employee), New York, NY – February 13, 2013
Pros: office locations are convenient in mid-town manhattan
Cons: schedule town halls and events on employees time, levels of responsibility and automonomy are absent in management levels below managing director, lack of transparency
Open work plan. No offices no cubicles for those below Director. Even non-traders sit in a trader format work space. Very noisy, difficult to do any work that requires thinking.

The management is more a Lehman rehash than Barclays Capital. As a result very few of the original Barclays Capital employees survived the lay offs that seem to come every – more... year since the acquisition.

Management is unschooled in the basics of management and developement of employees. All power is held at the Managing Director/ Director levels. Supervisors below that level have no say in the grading of their direct reports. The grades come down and you're expected to make the write up fit.

Technical training for many roles is virtually non-existent and completely dependent upon individuals being trained by their peers or having developed system skills at prior employers.

Co-workers are now from a variety of banks on the street. Former Lehman employees still dominate the mix. No coherent "Barclays" management approach or culture exists in NY. – less

Overall decent atmosphere and ability to learn, but not much room for growth
AVP - Equity Derivatives Product Control (Former Employee), New York, NY – February 13, 2013
I was able to gain a lot of product knowledge and was given the freedom to innovate and improve process, as well as build my own; however, I found that comp and promotions were not based on merit/value added and instead were based more on personal relationships within the team.
