Unreasonable managers, all about sales and numbers
Beauty Ambassador (Former Employee), Burlington, MA – April 25, 2013
Pros: discounts(50% off), meeting wonderful people (not including co-workers from that store, but other stores)
Cons: under 20 hours a week given unless you are part of management, dress code, "beauty boot camp", forced to call customers to make appointments
My manager would observe every detail of what I was wearing every day and would make sure I wouldn't have one chip on my nail polish. "Your shirt is too sheer" but I was wearing a shirt under it. "Your pants are too tight, get some dress pants", I had purchased those pants in a formal clothing section of a department store. The list goes on. Every employee – more... has a sales goal they have to reach including an average dollar sales they must keep at 50 or higher. If you have a customer that purchases only one product, you will be interrogated by the manager/assistant manager/key holder. "The customer only wished to purchase one item" is not a valid answer to them. They will have the same conversation with you over and over again and make you role play different scenarios with them. Even if you have great sales and one day you're having a slow day, they will tell you there is no reason you should be selling only one product to a customer. Every person must leave with at least $50 worth of products. Sometimes people know what they want and don't want to be sold to, even if they don't make it clear. If you work a 7 hour shift, you get a 30 minute unpaid for lunch. If you are 1 minute late, it is equivalent to not showing up at all. If you arrive early, you cannot punch in until your scheduled shift. I was forced to work off the clock because I had not reached my goal, but at the same time the key holder was telling me I needed to punch out but also to finish with the customer. So I punched out, and informed her I had punched out and she then told me to finish helping that customer. When I had finished, she had ended up assisting the customer when I was leaving which means there was no reason for me to be working off of the clock. This is probably one of the worst jobs I've ever had in my life. I even enjoyed my telemarketing job more than this. – less

Fast-paced and rewarding
Sales Representative (Former Employee), West Des Moines, IA – March 25, 2013
Pros: free samples of almost everything
Cons: can't be around co-workers outside of work
A typical day included opening and/or closing the store, applying products on guests, and explaining products to guests. From working there, I learned how to properly use and sell their makeup. The management was good and the co-workers were all great. The hardest part of the job was setting up the display windows but the most enjoyable was the pay.

Very upbeat place to work and explore my creativity
makeup artist (Former Employee), Lafayette, LA – March 25, 2013
Pros: lots of samples of products
Cons: high goals to meet without opportunity to earn commission
Its a very fun place to work. The hardest part of the job was to push customers to buy products even when they only wanted to window shop. The management team was very good. I enjoyed being able to express my creativity by helping others to feel better about themselves.

Be the Rockstar You Know You Are!
Corporate Employee (Current Employee), San Francisco, CA – March 14, 2013
Pros: people, products, parties. oh, and the amazing benefits.
Cons: not a con, but you need to be flexible. retail is a fluid environment, and change is inevitable, so roll with it!!!
I have worked here for over two years, and I have to say that I am amazed at how dedicated and passionate our employees are. Truly, if you work hard and produce results, you will not go unnoticed. Don't get me wrong, this is not a perfect company, there's always going to be rough patches with any employer, especially with how fast-paced retail is, but – more... I've learned so much, and have great examples of amazing leadership. You will grow here if you're willing to step up and be a leader. – less

Don't Let Them Fool You...
Key Holder (Former Employee), Atlanta, GA – February 6, 2013
Pros: discounted make-up, artistry skills
Cons: very strict standards, high employee turn-over, cut-throat atmosphere, poor management, unbalanced work/home ratio, under payed for what is expected from employee
I worked at Bare Escentuals for about two years and I couldn't take it anymore. I moved from the "Beauty Ambassador" to Key Holder in about six months. A lot of people BE is all about working in make-up and making women feel better about their outward appearance but that can't be farther from the truth. Ever since the company was bought out by Shesaido, – more... Bare Escentuals is nothing but a numbers company. It's all about how much you sell, what you sell and who you sell it to. They don't care about specifically teaching women how to do make-up properly or showing them new tips and tricks custom fit to their every day styles. They're focused on getting product out the door in whatever way possible. Don't get me wrong, I personally took this job as an opportunity to further develop my customer service skills, my selling abilities and my artistry skills. The clientele were the LEAST of my worries - it was the managers, coworkers and company standards. They hire under false pretenses, guaranteeing benefits that never follow through. They micro-manage under strict, outrageous policies and never have enough hours in the schedule for the employees. They don't believe in raises and don't appreciate the great women who dedicate too much of their time to their company. – less

Great enviornment to work in.
Beauty Ambassador (Current Employee), Denver, CO – January 30, 2013
Pros: free makeup, new skin care, trainings
Cons: not enough hours for the employees
I handled daily cashier duties, helped women with cosmetic needs. I learned how to manage sales goals and how to keep my clients posted on new products coming out. I also learned how important relationships to the clients are. The hardest part of the job was to sell an aging product, as a twenty year old, this was a very hard sale for me. I enjoyed – more... working with my co workers, it was a positive hard working enviornment. – less

plenty of work to be handled and very busy with customers
Boutique Manager (Former Employee), Pleasant Prairie, WI – January 5, 2013
Pros: great discount
Cons: atmosphere was tense between other managers in the district.
Open store with 4 cash registers, coach employess thru touch base meetings during shift, hire and train employes and receive shipment and keep up with inventory control.

I learned the art of make up and application to clients.

Management very supportive.

Co-workers were driven but not easy to deal with.

Hardest part of job was trusting my staff. – more... Culture of this company was very stiff and could have been more friendly.

Best part of job was my District Manager. – less

NORDSTROM IS A VERY DIFFICULT PLACE TO WORK. SO MUCH PRESSURE ON SELLING AND GOALS. MANAGERS AND HUMAN RESOURCE WORK TOGETHER AND ARE TWO FACED AND UNPROFESSIONAL. HUGE TURNOVER THEY SEEM TO KEEP THE WRONG EMPLOYEES AND I WOULD NEVER WORK IN A NORDSTOM AGAIN. NOR SHOP THEIR EITHER

Friendly environment and supports education
Boutique Manager (Current Employee), California – July 16, 2012
Pros: receive gratis for new product launches, very adamant about compensation for any work tasks required
Cons: structure and organization
* A typical day at work involves interpreting Productivity Reports to see where we stand with sales metrics; coaching our team on the positive outcomes as well as where the opportunities remain; interacting with clients on a personal level and gaining their trust; developing game plans to drive sales; and ensure daily operational tasks are completed – more... to expectation.
* I have mainly learned the clientele side to retail: Building relationships, calling back to follow up or even inviting them back into the store for events.
* Upper management tends to display favoritism and lack support to those who are struggling
* Co-workers all get along and create a positive atmosphere; there is a strong sense of teamwork present.
* The most difficult part of the job would be exceeding all metric expectations.
* The most enjoyable part of the job is the ability to give a client confidence. Nothing feels better than knowing you had a substantial impact on not only a client's day, but possibly on how they view themselves. – less

Repetitive & Independent
Lead Shipping Clerk (Former Employee), Hayward, CA – July 13, 2012
Pros: bonuses
Cons: poor management
A typical day at work starts with pulling orders, boxing them, making the shipping label, and staging it to be shipped. I"ve learned how to be detail-oriented because one mistake can send a package to the wrong person which would make an unhappy customer. I believed the management could have done more to hear its employees concerns. There really wasnt – more... a hard put to the job once I mastered it. I enjoyed increasing productivity day in and day out. – less
