Troubled place in a troubled industry
Former newsroom employee (Former Employee) –  San Jose, CAAugust 2, 2017
Staff has endured an incredible amount of reductions over the years, especially recently. Ownership has made it painfully clear that journalistic quality is not a priority. Dysfunctional at best.

Exciting and demanding
Copy Editor/Expeditor (Former Employee) –  Pleasanton, CASeptember 25, 2015
A typical day for me would include proofing about 20+ stories for AP Guidelines, paginating, coding and coordinating deadlines for five daily newspapers in various locations. A newspaper is a business that has no holidays, so do not expect to be home with your family on the holidays until you have earned it (I did!). I really enjoyed being apart of an entity that informed literally millions of people about what is important: elections, earthquakes, politics, etc. It was kind of exhilarating.

I do miss the banter between myself and the Senior News Editors and Managing News Editor.
Pros
Exciting and you stay informed
Cons
Demanding work schedule

Dwindling and Challenging Industry
Prepress (Former Employee) –  San Jose, CASeptember 21, 2015
While I enjoyed my work, the people and work environment, the inevitable question of layoffs, dwindling pay & benefits and even work itself (through consolidation) always lingered. Especially since the newspaper industry has been going through what seems like an endless challenge in maintaining ad revenue and readership in the digital internet age.
Pros
My personal schedule and work/life balance since I've always worked a mid-shift, thus my commutes avoided rush-hour traffic.
Cons
The uncertainty of the industry in regards to layoffs, pay and benefits.

Inability to decide for my customer who would benefit from my services.

Official response from Bay Area News Group
April 23, 2015

I've been with the company in San Jose for almost 6 years, and I witnessed that most front line sales managers were promoted from within. I do agree that the coworkers (essentially the company culture) are one of the best part of working here. It's too bad that one negative experience with maybe one or two managers that micromanage their employees, have led people to believe this is more prevalent than what I perceive.
