In 1947 BEHR was proudly founded in the garage of entrepreneur Otho Behr, Jr.
BEHR quickly became an industry leader with a reputation for the highest quality – more... paints, stains and varnishes.

Soon after the second world war, Otho Behr, Jr. began selling linseed oil to paint stores from the back of his woody station wagon. These same customers quickly made it known that they needed a product that would perform better on redwood than linseed oil. Seizing the opportunity, Otho, Jr. asked his father, a chemist, to develop a formula to meet their requirement; and soon the son and father team began making a clear finish and stain for redwood in the BEHR garage.
In 1948 BEHR moved into a Quonset hut in Pasadena, California. BEHR grew each year until 1954 when we moved to a factory building in Alhambra.
Rapid growth necessitated the next move, which was to a facility on Alton Avenue in Santa Ana, California, in 1957. For over 39 years BEHR had been a very successful stain and varnish manufacturer. In 1986 BEHR entered into the architectural paint business, setting the stage for the next dynamic growth era.
