Math Tutor (Former Employee) – Bellevue, WA – August 1, 2016
I would be assigned students that needed some help with their coursework. And then we would set up some place to meet for tutoring. I learned to manage my time properly and also looked at problems from different perspectives. I was an individual tutor. Minimal interaction with co-workers. The hardest part of the job was to come up with different way to explain the course to the students. The most enjoyable part of the job was when i managed to get the students to understand the problems.

Program Assistant for Internships & Work (Current Employee) – Bellevue, WA – February 4, 2015
Because employees at public colleges are a part of the state employee system, the state laws do not permit promotions. All positions must be publicly advertised. Internal applicants are required to go through the same screening process as external candidates. This presents some unique challenges for current employees who wish to progress in their career path.
The past 5 years or so, the state budget has been repeatedly cutting funding to the education system (including higher education). This has caused the education system to seek out multiple part-time workers rather than fewer full-time workers, in order to keep the institutions viable and functioning well. Because of the healthcare and retirement costs for hiring full-time employees, the bulk of positions are classified as full-time temporary or full-time contract or as part-time positions. Any of these categories saves the institution the cost of healthcare and retirement, therefore the institution remains fiscally viable.
