Great place if you're not in Employer Services
Application Consultant (Former Employee) –  Charleston, SCJanuary 12, 2017
Most employees love working at Benefitfocus and they take good care of their workers. The culture is great and they are always having fun events for the employees. Plenty of room to advance if you are willing to work crazy hours. You will be rewarded with better pay and more hours. If you are in Employer Services, you will have a totally different experience then the one I just mentioned. Its a call center atmosphere and you are excluded from most company functions. The management is excessive in the sense that there are tons of "team leads" and not enough people doing the work. The people who critique your work are so far removed from it that they can't give you proper advice on how to handle work situations and protocol.
Pros
Cool work environmnet
Cons
Excruciating work load and hours

Productive and laid back place to work, Just a stepping stone, don't expect anything more
Benefits Administrator (Former Employee) –  Greenville, SCNovember 12, 2016
Training is descent. You're provided the basics to perform on the floor. After your first days you could take calls in your sleep. Typical day, Arrive early ready to take calls. Served lunch and snacks almost everyday. Great work environment. peaceful atmosphere. Team activities to make the place fun. Was lead on by temp agency there was a high possibility of getting hired on to find out " call volume is lower than projected" eligible for rehire in the spring
Pros
During OE lunch was always provided, encourage overtime. Peaceful work atmosphere, Stress free, Simple as Pie
Cons
Let go without notice, Was told we would return, to get a call the following SATURDAY to pick up your belongings

It's best job I've had so far
Benefits Administrator (Current Employee) –  North Charleston, SCDecember 7, 2016
I love this job but I hate that it took them hiring on a bunch of temp workers and then letting them go with no notice in order for me to be one of the last people standing for a position. That's really my only qualm. The job comes with great benefits and is a great work environment between the culture and the job itself.

Get ready to be abused.
Test Manager (Former Employee) –  Daniels Island, SCOctober 24, 2016
Company had multiple salaried resources working 80-95 hour weeks regularly to meet goals and would send out emails for mandatory weekend overtime. The facilities were beautiful, with neat perks like very modern working areas, bikes to travel around campus, etc. However there is absolutely no consideration for work/life balance.
Pros
Nice facilities
Cons
Abusive overworking of employees

Termination without warning
Benefits Administrator (Former Employee) –  Charleston, SCSeptember 22, 2016
In my experience, no matter how much you devote yourself to this job and its culture, no matter how hard you try, no matter how much you pay attention, no matter how well you do, no matter how much your fellow employees trust and respect you, you can and will be terminated without warning and without the ability to explain yourself, even if the training regimen was unclear as to the consequences of your actions or how to appropriately vent your frustrations. Don't be fooled by their "laid back & informal" mentality. These people are unreasonable and have no concern for you whatsoever.
Pros
Soda fountain.
Cons
Termination without warning

Benefit administration specialists (Former Employee) –  Charleston, SCDecember 9, 2016
Don't believe the hype! This company couldn't care less about their employees. Low pay, managers who don't care, and fake "culture ". Don't bother applying there, are better jobs out there!
Pros
Free lunch during OE
Cons
Low pay, treated like children, many people were terminated without warning

Great corporate culture, terrible work/life balance
Account Manager (Former Employee) –  Charleston, SCNovember 14, 2016
Company growth in business requires increase in staff. There is a disconnect in evaluating staffing needs. The result is good employees who are willing to go the extra mile being routinely burned out and replaced.
Pros
Corporate culture
Cons
Terrible work/life balance

Going through difficult change and employees bearing the brunt
Implementation Team Manager (Former Employee) –  Charleston, SCSeptember 12, 2016
The company used to pride itself on it's culture. However, the companies focus on profitability has ruined the culture and made it a difficult place to work and be happy. They are moving a lot of positions overseas so most jobs are insecure. The hardest part of the job is maintaining a positive attitude while every everything is going badly around you. You'll work with some amazing people though. Most will do everything they can to help you out and make things better, which is infectious, leading you to put in a lot more time and effort than should be expected of anyone.
Pros
Free coffe, tea, soda. On-site lunch options. Great coworkers
Cons
No work/life balance. No Job Security. Pay 20-30% below industry standards

Daniel Island, Benefits Administrator (Contractor) (Current Employee) –  Charleston, SCSeptember 22, 2016
Brought on as a benefit administrator for open enrollment and was promised a permanent position. All of a sudden, "If we need you, we will keep you." The pay isn't enough to even worry about it. The training is lackluster at best. Avoid this company like the plague.

Good job during OE and they give you a lot of hope for advancement but it's rarely done. They let you go with no notice and does not take in to consideration that it's the holiday season.
Pros
Free lunches and can drink alcohol on Fridays

They do not care about employees
Benefits Administrator (Former Employee) –  North Charleston, SCDecember 8, 2016
Do not work for them. You are/will be disposable. Lots of free food, but no love. The turn over is huge, no one stays long. That is because the so called "management" does not care a thing about your life or circumstances.

Business Analyst (Current Employee) –  Charleston, SCAugust 1, 2016
This place is a total joke. Don't let the fake reviews here or on Glassdoor fool you. They try to sell you on a fake culture that has long been non-existent.

Standard corporate America where the employees are only seen as a cog in the wheel.
Pros
Free coffee
Cons
WAY to many to list, but the main one are compensation, management support, respect for the individual.

Growing, fast-paced software company
Account Manager (Former Employee) –  Charleston, SCJune 21, 2016
Benefitfocus is working hard to be profitable, making a lot of adjustments and working hard to deliver client satisfaction while constantly trying to innovate and improve the product. The environment is engaging and challenging, and co-workers can be very supportive. Above all, realize that change is frequent in a growing company.
Pros
Onsite freebies.
Cons
Limited performance management systems.

Don't expect to be here long
Data Analyst (Current Employee) –  Charleston, SCJune 6, 2016
Benefitfocus used to be a great place to work. In the last 2 years the Culture that is so praised has regressed to the point of extinction. There is no job security and all promotion or hiring is now exclusivly off shore. Save your self the trouble and don't apply here.
Pros
Free Coffee
Cons
Lack of communication at all levels of the company. No opportunity of advancement. Just stay away.

Good company atmosphere with questionable upper-management
Systems Analyst (Current Employee) –  Charleston, SCMay 12, 2016
The culture and co-workers at Benefitfocus are great, but upper management leaves something to be desired. Since going public many of the executives other decision-makers have been hired from outside of the company, which can provide a fresh perspective, but disconnects upper management from the culture which made Benefitfocus successful in the first place. The company is in a constant state of flux, with re-orgs happening once a year or more, due to the business having great high-level ideas and goals but a serious lack of practical and deliverable means to achieve them, and a tendency to rush into projects without all of the necessary groundwork.
Pros
Great people and culture

Don't be distracted by the flair
Operations Manager (Former Employee) –  Charleston, SCMay 5, 2016
Benefitfocus is a company that is experiencing growing pains and is unsure what to do at this point in its life cycle.

You will read many reviews about the workplace, and yes, it is fantastic (free Starbucks coffee, free fountain soda, food truck offerings, etc.).

However, more effort needs to be put into supporting their existing employees in terms of training and development (95% of the training is on your own), which is causing many to seek opportunities elsewhere,
Pros
free Starbucks coffee, free fountain soda, food truck offerings, etc.
Cons
No formal training program - left on your own with little guidance

Culture is Dead
Account Manager (Current Employee) –  Charleston, SCApril 7, 2016
Been here three years. The concept is awesome but the product is seriously flawed. Too many new clients come on board and are not properly configured, which causes problems that no one will take ownership to fix. Managment is too reactive. They spend too much time after a client is escalated rather than spending time on the front end to make it work correctly.
Limited potential for advancement, despite what managers say. Since you are in a position, the manager doesn't want to let you move since they'd have to move your workload to other all ready stressed out team members.
There has been a noticable decline in the "culture" since becoming a public company.
Pros
Great teammates
Cons
Managers that are not Leaders
