Lots of Great, Intelligent People/Horrendous Management

Bio-Rad has some great things going for it. Great products. Great Customers. Unbeatable location. Fantastic and loyal employees. However, Leadership and management leave a lot to be desired. There is no real vision for the future of the company. Norman, the CEO, who seems like a nice guy, also gives the impression that he doesn't really want to be there. This attitude trickles down through the ranks. To the point that you have some managers who don't want to be there so much, they actually aren not there.
Transparency is nonexistent. Career advancement, forget it. Competitive salaries. Not so much. Bio-Rad suffers from this delusion that it's one of the best places to work in the Bay Area, therefore it feels it needs to off nothing to it's employees to make them happy.
Live/Work balance is there. It is truly a 9-5 to place. More often a 10-4 place. If you go into the parking lot at 6pm, it will be virtually empty. There is no expectation that you work more than 40 hours or on weekends.
If you keep you head down and complete your goals and objectives on time, you can stay there indefinitely. If you actually want to push the envelope, get things done, improve the lives of the customers, this is probably not the place for you.
