BISSELL's in the business of seeing spots and taking care of dust bunnies. A pioneer in the carpet-cleaning industry, BISSELL Homecare makes a full line of vacuum cleaners, sweepers, steam cleaners, deep cleaners, and cleaning chemicals for home use. Its models include the Powersteamer, Big Green, and Spotlifter machines. The firm sells its products worldwide under the BISSELL and Woolite brand names through mass merchandisers ( Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart), home centers (Lowe's, Home Depot), hardware stores (Ace Hardware), and through BISSELL.com. It entered the deep-cleaning rental business in 2010. Founded in 1876 by Melville and Anna Bissell, the company is still owned and operated by the Bissell family.
BISSELL Homecare has become the top floor-care company in North America, with about 20% of the market. The company has achieved this by concentrating on innovation, boosting its factory staff with engineers, market researchers, data analysts, and industrial designers. The company's practice of hiring new college graduates alongside advanced-degree professionals has allowed the appliance maker to arm itself with fresh ideas and lessons learned. As a result, it has pulled ahead of rival brands the likes of Hoover, Eureka, and Dirt Devil. And BISSELL Homecare's now after market share established by longtime appliance provider Rug Doctor in the carpet-cleaning rental business with its Big Green Deep Cleaning Machine, which debuted in late 2010. BISSELL Homecare, which boasts a Bissell Innovation Center, focuses on providing its customers with value-added components, which are the more glamorous parts of the appliances business.
The company has maintained its momentum in the home appliances market through new product launches and an add-on acquisition, such as its Healthy Home Vacuum and ProHeat 2X Healthy Home deep cleaner. BISSELL Homecare touts the vacuum line as locking in 100% of captured allergens and the deep cleaner as removing two times more embedded allergens than ordinary vacuuming alone. BISSELL Homecare's acquisition of the Woolite rug and upholstery cleaning unit of Playtex Products has added another big brand name to its products portfolio. The deal, inked for $62 million, allowed the company to expand its cleaning solutions products, as well.
As part of its corporate culture, the company sponsors the BISSELL Pro Cycling Team for cycling's international appeal and because the company supports a health conscious lifestyle that includes exercise. The team typically trains in West Michigan.
The company is one of the oldest family-run businesses in the US. Co-founder Anna Bissell became the first female corporate CEO in 1889 following the untimely death of her husband Melville Bissell.
