The Peer-Support & Recovery Center program of Black Hawk-Grundy Mental Health Center in Waterloo, Iowa has a vacancy for one qualified Peer-Support Specialist. Our program provides peer-support services to adults with mental illness through a drop-in Recovery Center, through support groups, and through 1-on-1 home visits in the community. This position requires a minimum of 20 day-time hours per week of availability, including a weekly mandatory Friday meeting and at least one Saturday per month. Daytime Hours, Generally 9am-4:30pm with some shifts potentially being much shorter in duration.

Qualified staff will have their own personal lived experience with mental illness and are both active and strong in maintaining their own recovery. A primary job function will be their willingness to share their own personal experience as a helpful recovery tool for other adults with mental health concerns. The ideal candidate will be required to role model mental and physical wellness, demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills, and show strong social skills with a likeable personality. They will lead structured support groups, provide support at our drop-in center, participate in group activities, and potentially make 1-on-1 visits in clients’ homes.

A high school diploma or equivalent is required as is a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Additional education, and/or work/volunteer experience in the human services field is strongly preferred, as certification as a Mental Health Peer Support Specialist. Anyone not certified as CMHPSS will be required to obtain that state certification within one year of their hire date. We are an equal opportunity employer.
