Nurse Case Manager and Chronic Care Professional, Detroit, MI - January 10, 2017
I was employed at BCBSM for a total of 18 years. I worked in several departments in the company until 2007 when I transferred to the case management department. It was very difficult to work in the case management department. The management staff was under a lot of stress from upper management. Department had to pass accreditation with URAC and NQHI and they were constantly pushing case managers for more and more. Seemed like you never got a good compliment for work well done. It was always well "you should have done this". Poor morale in area. Big changeover. Most case managers didn't stay more than 3 or 4 years. I was in the department for 6 years and I was the longest employee in that department. It was very difficult emotionally to work under this staff. It came to a point where most of the management staff moved on or were let go. New management all the time. One good thing, is once trained and carrying case load of 30 cases could work from home and get out of the politics of the office setting. Again the most enjoyable part of the day was working with the patients. Providing education, providing plan of care, family education. The hardest part of the job was the documentation in the EMR. Lot of duplication. Very time consuming.
