Packing Salade Niçoise for a typical afternoon cruising the bay on your yacht? If so, you would be a target reader of Bonnier Corporation, publisher of magazine titles such as such as Saveur (an award-winning gourmet foods magazine), Cruising World, and Boating Life. Additional titles include Popular Science, Field & Stream, and Outdoor Life. Its Garden Design and Florida Travel & Life titles make up the company's Lifestyle & Shelter Group, with other groups devoted to Travel, Luxury, and Parenting. All total, Bonnier Corporation publishes about 50 special-interest magazines, and produces related multimedia projects and events. The company is owned by 200-year-old Swedish media firm Bonnier AB.
While the economy began to show signs of a recovery, Bonnier Corporation reported increased ad revenues during the second half of 2010. In particular, the company experienced improvements at its online and digital operations. That year it introduced its Mag+ platform for the iPad, which it used to launch its various magazine apps, such as Popular Science and Popular Photography. And in 2011 Bonnier Corp. partnered with Apple to participate in a new iPad edition subscription model on iTunes that allows readers to be billed on an ongoing basis (similar to traditional magazines and newspaper subscription plans). As a result, Bonnier sold 10,000 Popular Science iPad edition subscriptions in less than 6 weeks.
Another key area of the business is the Bonnier Parenting Group. The Group includes Working Mother magazine publisher Working Mother Media, as well as Babytalk, Conceive, Parenting, and Parenting.com. In 2009 the company split its Parenting brand into two separate magazines: Parenting Early Years and Parenting School Years in order to create more targeted publications. Parenting Early Years and Parenting School Years together reach more than 2 million readers.
Bonnier Corporation was founded in 2007 when parent Bonnier AB purchased 18 magazines from Time Inc. and combined those assets with its World Publications' 20 special interest magazines. (Bonnier AB acquired World Publications, publisher of Garden Design, Saveur, and Sailing World, in 2006.) Bonnier Corporation expanded significantly in 2009 when it acquired five magazines from the struggling Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S., adding niche titles Popular Photography, Flying, Boating, Sound & Vision, and American Photo to its portfolio. – less
