Great place for advancements
Director (Former Employee), Palo Alto, CA – April 10, 2013
Lots of support in wanting to advance within the company. Co-workers are like family and work closely with one another. Working with young children and knowing that they are learning throughout the day is the best part of the job.

Worst.Company.Ever. If I could give ZERO stars I would have.
Teacher (Former Employee), NJ – April 8, 2013
Pros: the kids are always cool and believe it or not, some of the parents really do see what is happening, and eventually they pull the kids out.
Cons: long days, $10 bucks an hour. if you have an education, this is not the teaching job for you. you would make more as a babysitter or nanny.
Typical day taking care of 20 kids of varied ages and company only cares about the money and appearances. Lots of irrelevant paperwork. No time to plan lessons. Meetings after work, mandatory. Very few company holidays. ALL YEAR ROUND teaching, without a break. Slow to earn PTO.

Management has a high turnover rate, but not as high as the staff.

Low – more... pay, low morale. Training is a joke, AND UNPAID! You may have to travel for training, on a Saturday or evening, and it is uncompensated.

If you have a degree and certifications, go substitute teach; at least that will be useful when you go seeking employment in a school.

BH likes you, the employee, to believe there is a line beating down its door to get kids into the classrooms. There isn't. Really, there isn't. Management will make you feel that you don't do enough, when you work very hard. Its a shame the level of disrespect towards teachers and other staff.

This company is living of an old reputation. Perhaps "back in the day" it was a good place to work. Now? Not! – less

Nurturing and child directed center
Primary Preschool Teacher (Current Employee), Boston, MA – April 8, 2013
As a primary teacher my day consisted of managing a classroom of 20 children ranging in age from 2.9-5 years old. Throughout my time at Bright Horizons I learned how to take observations of children and create an emerging curriculum focused on inspiring young learners to question the world around them with questions of "why", "what if", and "how".

The – more... management at my site always had the best intentions in mind and were often times engaged with teachers on a daily basis. However, when it came to following through with ideas discussed with staff there was often a lack of follow through.

Within my program there was 5 other preschool teachers, including my co-teacher. Amongst this group their was a feeling of community in which we shared ideas freely, brainstormed new engaging choices for the classroom, and discussed ideas for improving the program. Each teacher was committed to making the program as nurturing and engaging for children as it could be.

The most difficult part of this job was the efficiency of the administrative staff in completing tasks, and their ability to hold each program to the same standards of excellence.

The most enjoyable part of working as a teacher at Bright Horizons was experiencing the joy each child exhibited. I thoroughly enjoyed creating engaging lesson plans, encouraging preschoolers inquisitiveness, and being a part of their education. Each day offered new experiences which lead to a very rewarding experience. – less

Productive and social workplace, there was a tv room which all could utilize during breaks
Customer Care Specialist (Current Employee), Broomfield, CO – April 2, 2013
Pros: get to use your computer skills
Cons: not having a view in my cubical
As a Customer Care Consultant the typical day would be taking calls from providers, or the employees of the benefits needing to schedule or cancel care. There were a lot of employee's calling needing to create a profile in order to start utilizing the benefit. I was also cross trained as an outbound consultant which entailed calling centers or agencies – more... to check for space for families needing care. – less

5 star ratings are over the top
teacher (Former Employee), northern new jersey – March 24, 2013
Pros: working with kids
Cons: the low pay, no commuter benefits, hardly a day off, year-round with 7 holidays
If you look at the reviews with 5 stars that are either brief or full of bad spelling, it appears that someone is on a mission to undo the truthful, detailed reviews. This is a very hard job working with kids of various ages in the same class. There is no potty training policy. Its hard to teach when you're constantly being interrupted by "extra paid" – more... activities that pull your students out of the class, and by having to change diapers. Meanwhile, there is a spellcheck feature here and people don't bother to use it on these reviews? A deeper look seems as if it is the same person waiting every other day or so to come back and do damage control.

Its a hard job with long hours. Management is lousy. BH is all about keeping up appearances and taking in the cash, but is terrible about properly paying its teachers, certified teachers with degrees, who are having a difficult time getting jobs in real schools. Shame on you BH. Your PR is just that. Keep trying to do the damage control by sending your ilk here to trump up the company with one liners that "its just great" and "important work" but people who have worked there know the truth. Bad management, long hours, little pay, awful benefits. – less

Family Support Work Place with caring employer's
Associate Teacher (Former Employee), Phoenix, AZ – March 16, 2013
Pros: great company to work for
Cons: understaff same days
Typical day at the job included me supervising children from the ages 6 months to 5 years old, in the classroom and on the playground, I was a flexible person so I would go around to all the classrooms and great the children before I started work. I learned from management to look at situations from all perspectives before making a final decision and – more... acting uponit. The hardest part of the job was not having enough staff at times to cover schedules. The most enjoyable part of the job was imparting my knowledge that I learned from conferences, workshops, and applying them in the classroo.. Also, it was a enjoyable experience to earn my CDA while employed with company. – less

therlo – March 24, 2013

Having had a child who worked there, I can differ with this comment. The 9 hour days, low pay, terrible time off policy, expensive benefits. There was no commuting compensation tho it is touted. She worked hard producing lessons, and spent much of her day changing diapers of 2.5 to 4 year olds. Parents, teach your kids to use the toilets. Many of the "positive 5 star" reviews don't go into detail, and read like they are written by BH insiders with a goal to keep the money coming in, but not going to teachers or supplies.

Amazing fun, Children are great
Teacher (Current Employee), Madison, NJ – March 4, 2013
Pros: fun & rewarding
Cons: tedious paperwork, exhausting, stressful, parents can be nuts!
There is nothing more rewarding than watching a child learn and grow and knowing you helped! This company is great to work for but you need to find a good center to start in. Some centers are not ran the way they should be. Talk to the teachers in these centers, they will tell you the truth; if they're happy or not.

Enjoyable, fun work setting with opportunities to enich and impliment educational building blocks in children's lives.
Preschool Teacher (Current Employee), New York, NY – March 3, 2013
Pros: opportunity for growth, fun work environment and opportunity to teach in fun and non traditional ways.
Cons: long commute from home along with low pay with high commute cost.
The company that I work for is Bright Horizons Family Solutions. The branch of the compan that I work for is Back-Up and I work in a client based children's center. This means that I have different children everyday, which is a very different approach to teaching. Working in a Back- Up Children's Center has taught me that every single day in the life – more... of a child is essential. The company has sent me on many trainings for Handwriting without Tears and Everyday Math, which allows me to impliment these strategies with the children that come into my classroom on a daily basis. Classroom management is a constant struggle because these children do not come to my classroom everyday. I strive to make my classroom as structured and routine as much as I possibly can. I make sure to balance fun activities and educational activities throughout the day. The environment in my center is fun and light with an emphasis on teamwork. All of my co-workers help eachother out to ensure the students get the most out of their day with us. The hardest part of my job is the fact that I do not have the same students everyday. My passion in life is teaching and some days I only have 3 students. I would love to have a classroom with the same students and where I can implement curriculum in fun and unique ways. The most enjoyable part of my job is watching how you can make a difference in a child's life, even if it is only for one day. I am able to step outside of the box and teach in fun ways that the children don't even know they are learning! I also love when the children come back and remember me, even though I was only with them for a short period of time. – less

The worst "teaching" position you could ever ask for, even worse management.
Associate Teacher (Former Employee), New York – March 1, 2013
Pros: the children and their families were so sweet!
Cons: management, pay, hours, no appreciation, pretty much everything.
I was very anxious about working for this company because of all the bad reviews. I still accepted the position because I like to make my own judgement, and boy was I ridiculous to do so. Let me start with the classroom. The rules of the classroom are very simple to follow and teaching the kids is fun. The supervisors are never satisfied though. The – more... documentations are wrong, lesson plans wrong, this wrong, that wrong (even though it was so right the week before). Things are always changing and no matter how hard you try-it is never good enough. Teaching toddlers is difficult as is, and the ridiculous things they make the kids do are tragic. 15 minute circle-do you realize that ONE minute for a toddler is like 10 minutes for us? Of course, once the kids are no longer interested it's the teachers fault. They have to have "family style" dining which is so nice, HOWEVER 18mo olds will not be able to eat with spoons and forks (some will but most are still BABIES). Who gets in trouble-the teachers. They disregard the developmental stages completely, and God forbid the child is not developing as fast as their peers. This bothered me SO much, I mean SO much. It was mini prison for the children, follow the rules and shut up basically.
Now, let me talk about management because this is an even bigger joke. There is absolutely no support, no appreciation for your hard work, no standing behind employees. Someone gets hurt on the job-it's their issue, someone is sick and can't come in-they actually give you ATTITUDE and threats over the phone, someone isn't doing the job to the full-fire them. They have a tragic business practice and treat people like dirt, which many of the reviewers will back this up 100%. The "director" of my center was rude, not approachable, and back-stabbing. She did not give people a chance to state their opinions, worries, or their sides in case some issue arose. I was on the job for 5 months, and saw 6 teachers leave (run would be a more appropriate word to be honest).
I was excited for this position, but now I am so glad I left. I am HAPPY. I used to drive to work already mad I was going to be there and anxious every day about what "wrong" I was going to do that day. This is not what a way to to "hire people with HEART and enable them to use all of their talents in a respectful, collegial work environment". Yeah I call BS and you will be making yourself a huge favor by avoiding this place and looking for a position that will respect you as an individual. I'm happy I did. – less

POOR! ON EVERY LEVEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Teacher (Current Employee), 4 High Ridge Park Stamford CT – February 20, 2013
Cons: many
This is a pass the buck corporation. They hire inexperienced directors and then berate them for not being able to do the job after being lied to. The director in turn needs employees so she lies to them and when they cannot be successful they are pressured and abused. This company has unrealistic expectations. They want Doc boards changed monthly, you – more... must write a curriculum weekly along with 10 observations on children in your care...this is all for show to substantiate the ridiculous tuition. Teachers are not given plan time and its expected for u to work nights and weekends and to stay for parent teacher conferences. Your sick time is accrued,,,but although the school looks clean. The cleaning people do floors and bathrooms, no surfaces,,, No policy's that are adhered to and directors and regional managers pass the buck onto the staff. It's always the teachers fault. The pay is horrific!!!!! They shift and move children to adjust so that ratios can be maintained, however...they are so cheap they don't want to hire an appropriate amount of staff. Often staff is out of ratio. This is a violation of state regs. Shame on these people for stealing your money!...shame on you for allowing it! People are getting rich here off of your precious child...and it's not the staff. I would not send my own child there, It has to stop! – less

How do you even get an interview?

slipjiggs – February 26, 2013

Please realize that not every B.H. center is like this. Directors from the center I used to work for were sent there several times to retrain that particular director for obvious reasons. There are over 700 centers around the world. Most of them are much better than the 1 you work at. Ask for a job transfer if you are so unhappy. Also, if your children nap, that is 2 hours a day that gives you plenty of time to do your doc boards and child portfolios. It doesn't take that long to create a lesson plan. Maybe you just need some extra training?

– March 11, 2013

I WORKED AT A BOSTON CENTER.MY EXPERIENCE WAS AWFUL. I HAVE A B.A AND I RECEIVED A PAY OF A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA. THEY DONT HAVE A CHART FOR PAY THEY GIVE THE AMOUNT THEY WANT TO WHO EVER SERVES AS A PUPPET. THE BACK UP PROGRAM IS AWFUL THEY RECEIVE DIFFRENT KIDS EVERY DAY. ITS NEVER A SEQUENCE LESSON THAT YOU CAN HAVE. FOR REGULAR PROGRAM THERE IS NEVER TIME TO DO LESSON PLAN OR TSG , PREPARATION TIME ITS VERY WEIRD THE MAYORITY OF THE TEACHER START AS FLOATERS. I WAS A FLOATER TO DIFFRENT LEVELS INFANT TODDLERS AND PRESCHOOL. THE TIME THAT I WAS PART OF THE PROGRAM I HAD A SUBSTITUTE DIRECTOR WHEN THE DIRECTOR CAMED BACK SHE WAS VERY STUPID AND AN ARROGANT ATTITUTE IN WHICH SHE FORCED LOTS OF TEACHERS TO QUIT.

Blalalalala – March 22, 2013

Fun first Teaching Job
Lead Teacher (Former Employee), 435 East 70th Street 2nd Floor – February 16, 2013
Pros: health benefits, 401k, family type of environment among teachers.
Cons: long hours, inflexible, outrageous policies, slave work, low pay.
This company is great because of its benefits and supportive environment when it comes to training and teacher support. However, the management is shaky and the supervisors in higher positions are quick to fire anyone in spite of the amount of time, effort and success rate employees have. When I began working in 2006 it was a wonderful place to work. – more... Now teachers have no flexibility and are forced to follow ridiculous rules and do not work in an early childhood setting. – less

Pros: children
Cons: unpaid lunch break, very poor management, long hours, low pay, no appreciation for work at all
I thought this job was going to be a dream come true. The children were great and we had fun, HOWEVER the company doesn't stand up for its employees at all. There is a huge turnover rate because management could not care any less, every teacher is very replaceable. Get on the good side of all the parents because if even one doesn't like you the company – more... will mix the teacher with dirt and send them on their way. They are unappreciative and not loyal. Overall, it doesn't make sense to work there. – less
