About Bronx Charter School for Excellence
Founded in 2004, the Bronx Charter School for Excellence (BCSE) is one of New York's true success stories.
What began as a K-5 public school alternative for children in the Parkchester section of the Bronx, has flourished into the highest performing charter school in the state. Today, BCSE serves more than 440 children and their families and recently – more... expanded to include a middle school ultimately serving grades K-8.
BCSE's achievements were not an accident. When the school first opened it faced significant challenges. Several years later, many grades were still struggling to meet state standards and performed below the level of their local district. There was a lack of clearly defined curriculum, inadequate professional development, significant leadership turnover and frustration among the teachers.
In 2007, several changes were instituted by the Board of Trustees and a new leadership team. Heralding quality over quantity, school days were shortened and a more integrative learning approach was adopted. Summer school - in its traditional form - was cancelled in lieu of a summer project that included the entire family. An environment was fostered that encourages commitment, collaboration, and confidence among teachers, students, and families.
BCSE's challenging academic program is complemented by parent-driven initiatives, school-wide events and an extensive extra-curricular offering that work together to enrich the total child. Every scholar, parent, staff and board member has a personal responsibility for the school's success. As a result, BCSE has dramatically improved academic results and a culture of excellence that serves as a successful model for schools across New York State. – less – More from ZoomInfo »
