Poor place to work (inpatient)
Mental Health Associate (Current Employee) –  Hagerstown, MDJune 18, 2017
Quilality care to patients should be of the highest priority. However patients are overlooked in this hospital due to gossip, nepotism, jealousy and backstabbing. There's no opportunity for job advancement without taking down a co-worker. Administration helps to facilitate hostile work environments. Senior staff are often not welcoming to new employees.

None
Cons

Working with patients is the best aspect.
Teacher (Former Employee) –  Hagerstown, MDApril 27, 2017
Unsafe, hostile, gossiping environment. It's all about the money, therapeutic environment second. Yearly cost of living increase quickly followed by yearly increase in health care costs. Vision and mission statements are no longer practiced by the administration.
Pros
Patient care for those who truly struggle with psychiatric illnesses.
Cons
If you don't smoke than you don't get breaks, Administration no longer practice the vision and mission statement

Great teamwork and support
Nurse (Current Employee) –  Hagerstown, MDApril 19, 2017
Brook Lane is a unique facility that offers care to all ages. It is nice to work for a place that is supportive from the board members to the front line staff. Most of the staff show a true compassion for the patients. Everyday is a different day which keeps you on your toes . If you're looking for a good environment this is the place for you.

Stressful and unsafe
Lead Mental Health Associate (Current Employee) –  Hagerstown, MDApril 13, 2017
The environment does not look at what is best for it's patients or staff. Many times nurses and upper management do not consider whats best for the patients. MHA's spend most of the time with the patients and are under paid and overlooked more often and not. Although, times are usually rough most of the fellow mbas are supportive and great coworkers. There is not much opportunity to advance due to management not releasing people from positions to move up. The turn over rate is high and most employees are there for less than a year.

Negative reviews were for the hospital. I've never worked there, but the school is a good place to work.
Teacher (Current Employee) –  Hagerstown, MDFebruary 28, 2017
If you are committed to helping children, it's a great place to be. The school and residential programs are good places to work. The pay isn't great, but there are good benefits and opportunities to advance (especially if you have a bachelor's degree). The staff are fun, helpful, caring, and dedicated. The school hours are just that, school hours, very good for those with families.
Pros
benefits, friendly staff, fullfilling work
Cons
pay isn't great

HUGE DISCONNECT between HR recruiting/orientation and reality of work environment
Mental Health Associate (Former Employee) –  Hagerstown, MDJanuary 5, 2017
Terrible experience. HR orientation involved first four days: wonderful! HR staff friendly, welcoming and encouraging. Then the nightmare begins: First day on inpatient unit: total disconnect. Nurses extremely disrespectful, unfriendly, cold atmosphere. Hyper critical, discouraging nurse trainer/educator. Very controlling work culture--staff on unit barely spoke to new staff (I was one of 3 new staff in this group). When you voice dissatisfaction with treatment you are targeted as the problem. Clients were fun to work with but your interaction with them is so regulated/controlled that is difficult to build any working relationship. You are constantly reminded of your “place.” Basically as a Mental Health Associate you’re treated as a Nursing Assistant, which by itself is fine if that is what you are seeking career wise but be prepared to be treated as a flunky by nursing staff with little to no acknowledgment. Highly encourage you avoid this place (unless you are an RN or higher level of pay scale, which seem to be the only positions treated respectfully) if you value at all being happy in your work life.
Pros
HR staff
Cons
Unit Nurses/co-workers

unsatisfied
employee that is unsatified and looking (Current Employee) –  inpatient hagerstownJune 20, 2016
If you do not fit in the clique its not a place to work. Only the ppl that squeal and backstabbing will be promoted. Breaks are far and few btw and then complaints that you took one. No training completed by experience staff the correct way. Left to flounder. Unsafe and no real security. Policies changing continuous with no guidance. Repurcussions in front of patients and peers. About money making not patients or staff. Mandations daily. .Instead if hiring within for job opportunities hiring from outside.

Stable organization & Great co-workers
Supervisor (Current Employee) –  Hagerstown, MDJuly 6, 2015
Despite some other negative reviews, I think Brook Lane is a good place to work overall. They certainly could upgrade use of tech and seem to be headed in the direction of progress in this area. Otherwise, there is plenty of opportunity (needs in the community) and Brook Lane is growing to meet those needs. The work is interesting and keeps you busy. I feel like co-workers care about each other and the company for the most part. Things feel like they are changing for the better at Brook Lane. If you are interested in helping others, it is a good place to work.
Pros
Autonomy, co-workers, growth of company
Cons
Changes needed to increase use of technology, more work than people can handle

Low wages, terrible management,
Prefer not to say (Former Employee) –  HagerstownJune 27, 2015
Low wages justified by phrases such as "well, we ARE non profit". Leadership team believes they are so talented that they are responsible for the growth of the company, when the fact is, the company only exists because they have NO competitors. As soon as any competitor enters the market, they will vanish immediately. C level execs have no clue how to run a business, they just build buildings and watch staff struggle to keep the doors open while the money pours in from the monopoly they have in the area. Execs only hire managers with less skills and knowledge than themselves to maintain control of the company. Management doesn't care that the company is falling apart since they're all old and ready to retire anyway. There are some good people that work at brooklane, but they are rare, and anyone that met with any sense was looking for another job.
Pros
If you have no idea what you're doing, you'll be promoted.
Cons
See above!

Poor leadership. They don't care too much about their employees
Mental Health Associate (Current Employee) –  Hagerstown, MDMay 12, 2015
Poor leadership. They don't care too much about their employees. There are some enjoyable co-workers but not too many that are from administration. Work environment is always hectic and you don't get paid enough for the amount of work you do.

Therapist/Counselor (Former Employee) –  Hagerstown, MDApril 18, 2015
Brook Lane is a quality institution and does excellent work with its clients. Since outpatient therapists work on a fee for service basis, there are opportunities to work part-time, full-time, or even extra time if a person wants to earn more money.
Pros
Flexible hours.
Cons
They are in process of installing a new automated medical recoprd system.

Admissions Coordinator (Current Employee) –  Hagerstown, MDJune 27, 2013
I only work overnight weekends, so I do not get a lot of interaction with the other employers or management. In almost two years, I have never met my boss in person! The job itself is interesting and enjoyable. The coworkers I speak with via email or over the phone are always pleasant and helpful.

Co-workers are nice and easy going. Your not rushed at the job but you always have to be aware of your surroundings because patients may attack you or someone else and you have to restrain them. Self defense class or required.
