I enjoyed working at the Brooklyn Public Library...
Technology Resource Specialist (Former Employee), Brooklyn NYMay 7, 2014
Pros: promotions and pay
Cons: working nights or weekends
I enjoyed working at the Brooklyn Public Library. The days went by fast, because the library branches that I worked at was always busy. The library on the job training was awesome. I acquired all my computer skills working at the library. I got along with all of my managers. They were balance and approachable. The hardest part of the job was telling – more... people they had to pay their library fines. The most enjoyable part of the job is when you can help a customer find what they are looking for in a timely fashion – less

Tutor (Former Employee), Brooklyn, NYMay 3, 2014
Pros: learned a little spanish
Cons: had no cons great learning experience
Tutor many Spanish speaking students in their efforts to learn English as their second language. I learned the difficulties they faced by only speaking Spanish and learning to write in English. Management was excellent being this was my first time volunteering, taught me a lot of important things. This job was pretty easy everyone was prepared daily. – more... the most enjoyable part of this job was meeting people from different countries and building lasting relationships. – less

Assistant Technical Resource Special (Former Employee), Brooklyn, NYNovember 6, 2013
This was my first job and I learned a lot about dealing with people. There were a lot of diverse people who come to the library and you need to have the patient to work and help these people. The worker was also great.

A book lover's dream!!!
Administrative Assistant (Former Employee), Brooklyn, NYOctober 21, 2013
Pros: when i needed to take time away it was given to me.
Cons: standing for long periods of time.
My main responsibility was to fill the Holds List.
I learned more of the inner workings of the Holds section.
Management is management because they are good at their profession.
My co-workers were of all ages, backgrounds, and religions. They are all still dear to me.
The hardest part of the job was not locating a person's request because it had been – more... misplaced by someone.
Every time that I processed a Hold, it felt as if I was giving someone a Christmas gift!!! :) Only, this 'gift' eventually had to be returned! – less

I love the library because i love to read and i'm surrounded by so much knowledge. It's also a great place to meet different types of people.
Part-time Clerical Assistant (Current Employee), Brooklyn, NYJuly 28, 2013
Pros: lots of books to read dvd's and cd's like the people i work with.
Cons: there is no room for advancement.
A typical day at work i would go in look at the schdule to see if i'm working at the checkout desk first or the return desk. I take my stuff to my locker say hello to my coworker and my supervisors the i go to my desk. At the checkout desk i give library cards to first time users at the library and replaced cards to the patrons that lost theirs. I answer – more... the phone to patrons that want to renew the item on their cards because they can't make it to the library. I also direct the patrons to the restrooms, the cafe , the computer room and the kios so they can pay their overdue fines. On the return desk i check in the the books and dvd's the the patrons return and inform them over their fines if the had any. – less

Pros: great supervision
Cons: no breaks
I did not really enjoy working at this place. It was crowded, and felt a bit unorganized. At times, it felt as though I was just being given random tasks to do.

Associate (Former Employee), FriendsNovember 9, 2012
Pros: friendly people, nice place to work
Cons: laid off for budget constraints
Overall, the library was a nice place to work with dedicated staff. Sometimes, my boss in the Volunteers office would go off her meds and it was hairy but that was at highly stressful periods.

Learned a lot about how to work in a bureucratic environment and it was helpful for my later jobs.
