About Burns & McDonnell

At Burns & McDonnell, we believe in the power of an entrepreneurial dream. It’s how we began, in 1898, when Clinton Burns and Robert McDonnell opened a consulting engineering firm. Today, we're a full-service engineering, architecture, construction, environmental and consulting solutions firm with 4,000-plus employee-owners in more than 30 – more... offices worldwide.

The company secured its first major client in 1900 and inched into the black with net earnings of 13 cents after three years in business. That was just the beginning. By the time the firm reached the 50-year milestone in 1948, it had completed nearly 2,100 projects worth about $664 million. In the decades that followed, the firm found consistent growth and new markets. At the end of 1985, the employees honored the entrepreneurial spirit of the founders by purchasing the company from Armco Steel. This kicked off a cultural renaissance that continues today.

The core of our culture: 100 percent employee ownership. Because the company belongs to the employee-owners, they approach their jobs a little differently. Exceptional work leads to client success, which leads to company success. It's a beneficial cycle that circles back directly to the employee-owner financially, now and in the future. We’re proud that our employee ownership program regularly earns high praise. In fact, the ESOP Association named us the ESOP Company of the Year in 2012.

The Burns & McDonnell portfolio is filled with diverse, award-winning projects for a broad range of clients who rely on the firm to solve their most challenging problems. There is no sitting on the sidelines doing busywork. Professionals are entrusted with the power and responsibility to make decisions. The owner mentality drives an even higher passion for success because employee-owners see the direct financial benefits of working hard, providing quality deliverables and coming in under budget.

Involvement in the community is personal for our employee-owners. Our community partnerships sprout from grassroots and span the globe with the goal of inspiring youth, creativity and critical thinking. Burns & McDonnell provides financial support, but we also teach. We swim, walk and run to raise funds. We create and support exciting educational programs and nurture young people into thinking big. – less
