Serving such clients as SmithKline Beecham, American Airlines, and Champion Enterprises in the past, the company operates through more than 130 offices (including affiliates) in almost 100 countries. Burson-Marsteller was established in 1953 by Harold Burson and Bill Marsteller and joined the Young & Rubicam group of companies in 1979. Young & Rubicam is a subsidiary of media services conglomerate WPP Group.

In late 2010, the agency launched PivotRED, a strategic consultancy subsidiary, with expertise in the digital arena catering to clients that fall outside the Burson-Marsteller traditional network. Turning its attention to the Middle East, in 2008 Burson-Marsteller entered an alliance with Asda'a, a public relations firm also a part of WPP.
