The role of the Social Media Engagement Officer is to help ensure that Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is maximizing its online footprint and impact, thereby supporting broader awareness of the Institute’s clinical care, research and fundraising activities. The Social Media Engagement Officer will identify and engage with opinion leaders, high traffic web sites, appropriate online communities and others to create mutually beneficial interactions and build Dana-Farber’s visibility online.

Specifically, the Social Media Engagement Officer will:

  • Help refine and advance a comprehensive social media strategy for Dana-Farber
  • Manage social media activities including writing stories and posts, promotions, and the like
  • Serve as a voice of Dana-Farber in our own and other social media communities
  • Moderate online patient communities
  • Review and act upon changing social media trends
  • Respond to emails and online inquiries concerning Dana-Farber
  • Manage presence on social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and elsewhere
  • Identify online opinion leaders and sites
  • Post relevant DFCI comments and content on appropriate web sites, blogs and communities elsewhere
  • Measure the impact of social media on all initiatives
  • Help educate others at Dana-Farber about best practices in social media
  • Create and manage a blogger outreach program in conjunction with media relations staff
  • Regularly advise other Dana-Farber communications staff on using social media to support their campaigns
  • Monitor trends applications and new developments in social media
  • Work with cross-functional teams to design and deliver online projects


  • Experience of 4-5 years of social media writing (at least 2 years writing for the web)
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in English or Journalism
  • Appropriate technical skills and facility with social media applications and analytics
  • The ability to train others
  • High editorial skills and standards
  • Enthusiasm and the ability to garner support and interest from contributors throughout the institute
  • Demonstrated success in a collaborative work environment
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and their participants (Facebook, Digg, Youtube, Twitter, Flickr, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience with blogging
  • Proven track record of social media campaign success
  • Experience in brand building online
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A team player with ability to work to tight deadlines, deliver results and use initiative
  • Strong project management and organizational skills
  • Good knowledge of principles of SEO
