Buzzi Unicem USA has a concrete goal -- to secure a top market spot in US cement manufacturing. The company produces portland and masonry cement and ready-mix concrete used in highway and airport paving and concrete block manufacturing. It runs more than half a dozen cement plants with an annual production capacity of about 8.5 million metric tons and about 30 terminals from which it distributes its products mainly throughout the Midwest, Northeast, and Southeast. Formed out of the merger of RC Cement and Dyckerhoff's Lone Star Industries, Buzzi Unicem USA is a subsidiary of Italy-based BUZZI UNICEM.
Buzzi Unicem USA has operations in Texas through Alamo Cement, which operates 80 batching plants, 500 truck mixers, and four aggregates quarries. In order to improve its distribution capabilities the company partnered with Ash Grove and Texas Lehigh to build a marine terminal near Houston. Buzzi Unicem USA also operates Memphis Ready Mix, which gives it significant presence in Tennessee.
Like many construction materials suppliers, the economic downturn and continuing lull in the US homebuilding market are adversely impacting Buzzi Unicem USA. With production and sales dropping, the company was compelled to restructure some of its operations, halting clinker and cement production in Kansas and slag grinding in Louisiana. It also shuttered a cement factory in Illinois.
Meanwhile, in 2010 Buzzi Unicem USA completed its largest cement production plant to date in near St. Louis, Missouri. The line has a production capacity of more than 2 million tons per year. The plant is expected to help the company as the economy rebounds and infrastructure projects pick up. – less
