The mission statement at CAS is what attracts many of the staff members to work there.

You get the behind the scenes action of a interactive museum, which feels like 4 in one. A new exhibit here and there would be put out and one would get a chance to go check it out with one's free visits to the museum.
Pros
Free visits to the museum

Working with fish and other animals
Biologist II (Former Employee) –  San Francisco, CAOctober 17, 2016
The Academy is a wonderful place to visit and work. If you like animals and the diversity of life, you will find everything you need. From fish, plants, reptiles, bugs, and rocks. My day was filled with taking care of a number of different animals and working with the public.
Every animal has different needs in order to thrive and I would try everyday to meet those needs. I would then convey all this to visiting public so they could more completely know what they were seeing. It was very rewarding.
The hardest part of the job would be if we lost and animal due to illness or age. You spend a lot of time with these creatures and so when they are ailing, your job becomes more emotional. On the other hand, when the steps you are taking on their behalf work and they bounce back. That is wonderful

Beautiful green facility, excellent public programs
Guest Services Associate (Current Employee) –  San Francisco, CAAugust 22, 2016
The work day typically goes by fast, even on a 9 hour schedule. The people I work with are wonderful: smart, friendly, and interesting.
The hardest part of the job is feeling over qualified.
The most enjoyable part is seeing how happy visiting the museum makes children and people from all over the world.
Pros
great work atmosphere.
Cons
repetitive job duties.

Working to connect people with Science
Guest Services Attendant (Former Employee) –  CAMarch 19, 2015
Working at the California Academy of Science was both educational and allowed me chances to share it with the public. When I worked there, the Academy had just reopened to the public so there were a few bugs that need to be worked out while we were getting record attendance.
Pros
Access to the resources of the Academy
Cons
Increased bureaucracy

Science is where it's at!
Guest Services Associate (Former Employee) –  San Francisco, CANovember 19, 2012
Work at the California Academy of Sciences was intellectually stimulating! The scientists, docents and front gate staff are all the friendliest, most professional gang you will ever encounter under one rooftop.

It is an absolute dream to work at the CAS. If you are someone with previous museum experience then consider transferring to the greenest place on Earth!
Pros
dedicated full time hours with paid holidays and benefits
Cons
not a whole lot of job security :(

Unproductive workplace with no perks
Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) –  San Francisco, CAJune 24, 2012
Very disorganized company. They keep the incompentant people and they get rid of the competant. Management is the worst. Constantly Micromanaging. Management seriously dosen't know what they are doing. Miserable place for its employees, alot of backlash. Human Resources does nothing to protect its employees. The work is easy, you needn't be a rocket scientist to do the job. I would not recommend to anyone to work there. Its a joke. Don't think that just because that its the Academy of Science that it would be a great place to work at because its not.
Pros
nothing.
Cons
everything.

Guest Services (Current Employee) –  San FranciscoJanuary 11, 2012
Operations here reflect a true collaboration of uniquely talented individuals and teams that work to maintain the organization's goals which are to educate the public about the natural world through our exhibits and programs.
It's hard work however it's always changing and on the forefront in the way they present ideas to the public.
Pros
employees are all great to work with.
Cons
as with any non profit, there are challenges with upward movement.
