Nature Programmer and Wilderness Leader, Groveland, CA - March 14, 2018
Tawonga is more than a workplace. It is a home for 2.5 months. It's a rustic and unique experience to live in a gorgeous valley, sleeping in cabins and tents and becoming close to nature. My supervisor was beyond helpful. She was uplifting, informative, thorough, and inspiring. I made best friends with my coworkers, which is saying a lot because I knew no one to begin with and am from Mississippi. I was not expecting to fit in, but Tawonga offers a work experience that uplifts the worker to thrive. On a typical workday as a Naturalist I would organize activities and conduct them for children. I also tended the garden and farm. I created creative programming in the form of blocks that were worked out in the schedule, and the activities might consist of making lip balm, creating fairy houses, making a fresh salad out of garden veggies, or visiting the farm and holding a "goat mitzvah" (bar mitzvah for the goats). The most difficult part of the job was being cut off physically from society, but this was also the most valuable part as well.
