Pros: great conversations, actually doing something about political and social injustice.
Cons: no insurance, very low pay, very hard job to do everyday.
We would review our goals and canvass public places searching for fundraising and voter support for our causes and ballot initiatives. I learned how to approach people with confidence and persuasiveness and to be resilient and try harder no matter what. My co-workers were supportive and we all had each other. The management was not the best. It was a sink-or-swim attitude toward canvassers and it led to people leaving often. The hardest part of the job was the financial insecurity and the constant rejection from strangers, even abuse. We all did it because we believed in our cause (gay rights) and wanted a better world, and the most enjoyable part of the job was meeting people who thanked us for being out there and fighting for them.
