First, I will say that Carlton Hair is a great place to start off your career as a stylist. Their assisting and education program is exceptional and worth the time and effort. You can build your client base rather quickly.
When it comes time to advance, however, it is competitive and can be stressful. I know that some things have changed since I left, but there used to be many hurdles to jump to move up in the company. As Assistant Manager and Senior Stylist, I saw this first hand with many of my employees, but my hands were often tied being that Carlton is part of Regis Corporation. I have to say I loved being a manager and I loved my managers as well. It was fun to come to work everyday and we were like a little family. The hardest part of the job, for me, was ensuring that everyone was able to get breaks and lunches in accordance with California law. Lunches and breaks are few and far between in most salons, but it is your right and it's the law.
In the end, I moved on and left the salon and my styling career, because after 10 years of standing on my feet all day and working nights and every weekend.. I wanted to settle down and start a family.
