Blamed for everything
Faculty Support (Former Employee) –  Independence, KYFebruary 21, 2018
I had many phone issues, higher management didn't care about us. Not much diversity. My coworkers were sweet, but thats about it. Processed orders and phone orders at the same time. Quotas hard to meet. Stay away from this company.

Old fashioned but trying to get up to speed
Manager (Current Employee) –  Boston, MAFebruary 3, 2018
To be blunt - topline leadership is working to make Cengage a successful and competitive publisher of learning materials. This includes working on speed, collaboration, etc.Unfortunately, the market needs changed faster than the internal culture changed within the company. High level leaders appear to be operating in a very old fashioned/outdated culture. Long and unproductive meetings in which high level leaders only work to protect their own positions, rather than address the real issues and have the tough conversations, that will truly make a difference in process improvement. It is not productive, nor the Lean way, to poetically word a message that takes 10 minutes and multiple paragraphs, to deliver a message in what can be put bluntly with 4 words - "This is not working".
But... at least they are trying.
Pros
Working to make a difference
Cons
CYA tactics that criple progression

Great benefits but you're stuck
Customer Technical Support (Current Employee) –  Independence, KYJanuary 7, 2018
Cengage reels you in with really great benefits. The hours aren't bad, the time off starting out is awesome and you earn more weeks quickly (by your two year anniversary you have 3 weeks of paid time off a year). The problem is that there isn't a lot of room for advancement, especially in tech support. This group really isn't respected and it's hard to move out of tech support because they are always incredibly understaffed. Rushes (the beginnings of school semesters) are hellish but the rest of the year stays pretty low-key. It's not a dream job but the pros typically outweigh the cons.

The working schedule where your work hours change every 3 months is hard when you have a family. There is not flexibility for someone that has not worked here longer then 3 years to get a schedule that is perm.

Innovative publishing company in the middle of transformation
Director of Software Development (Former Employee) –  Boston, MAJanuary 3, 2018
Cengage is an ambitious publishing company in the middle of the transformation into a 100% technology organization. As a case with any transformation, it comes with a price of too many changes, politics, constant re-orgs, etc. Culture can vary from team to team. Technology stack is cutting edge and hours are flexible.
Pros
Technology stack is up-to-date, flexible hours
Cons
Constant re-orgs, politics, culture is poor in some teams

Organization changes lots!
Content Manager (Current Employee) –  Boston, MANovember 2, 2017
I have been working at Cengage for a little over 2 years. Out of all 7 people who interviewed me at time of hire, only one remains with the company. The org charts and managers can change frequently. The company is working to be a digital, ed-tech company rather than a traditional publisher. So the changing culture is a positive for those who want to work in tech and a negative for those who feel they are "publishing" professionals.

Management is good, very communicative. But the annual review process and talent management is disconnected from the day to day and projects you work on.

The hardest part is that the workload is unpredictable. Some days are very busy and others are not.

Frequent restructuring
Senior Financial Analyst (Former Employee) –  Mason, OHOctober 23, 2017
Company has undergone difficult financial times leading to multiple restructurings. Additional layers of VPs were created while layoffs occurred. Uncertainty has affected the company's culture. Like anywhere there are great managers and not so great managers. Mine happened to be great.

All in all this is a good place to work but working at least 58 hours a week you really didn't have much of a home life.
Stock Controller (Former Employee) –  Independence, KYOctober 10, 2017
All and all this was a great place to work. The only downside to it being that you work 58 hours a week you really didn't have much of a home life but if you look at the positive and let you save a lot of money because we didn't have time to spend it
Pros
401K match program
Cons
No home life

Great vacation days and relaxed but poor compensation/bonuses
Inside Sales Representative (Current Employee) –  KentuckyOctober 5, 2017
Although the company has recently granted men great paternity benefits and made their bonuses seemingly attainable and desirable they constantly seem to make changes in order to ensure that bonuses are not fully attained. Switching up responsibilities in order to make sure they do not have to pay people their bonuses. Hiring is based on who they "like" and hardly has anything to do with work ethic and experience. Be aware of the management, they will do anything to save the company from compensating you for your hard work.
Pros
compensation does not match work load
Cons
relaxed during off season
