Fulfilling Career with a sense of community
Coach Operator (Current Employee) –  Columbus, OHOctober 5, 2016
If you are looking for somewhere to make lifelong friends while you are working COTA may be the place for you. The sense of community is amazing and the camaraderie is great. It attempts to make up for the extremely long hours that the day consists of, and the uncertainty of not having set "office hours".
Pros
friendships, benefits
Cons
long breaks, longer hours, working alone

Cool if you don't really have a life and like to make money
City Bus Operator (Former Employee) –  Columbus, OHJuly 5, 2016
There is a lot of money to be made here if you really want to. Unfortunately, that means having hectic and irregular schedules. Dealing with the general public can be difficult, but sometimes rewarding. Have to have thick skin. Best thing to do is come to work, do your job and mind your own business. They do a lot of promoting from within, which is a good thing. This is one of the highest paying city transit jobs in America.
Pros
Pay, benefits, room for advancement
Cons
Constantly changing, irregular, hectic schedules

Transit driver/Coach cleaner (Current Employee) –  Columbus, OHOctober 14, 2016
Sometimes the hardest part of the job is just being there. Sometimes the hours are very long and the shifts are split. But it pays well and some of the passengers are great.
Pros
Pays well, OPERS, benefits
Cons
Long hours. Little time for family

Bus Operator/ Safe driver Mentor (Current Employee) –  Columbus, OHNovember 28, 2016
My advice is just come to work, do your job. Most operators are successful, but leaving the personal problems at home. having great customer service skills, and not taking the talk from the public personal.
Pros
Uniform allowence
Cons
Short breaks or non when your straight 8 driving. eat when you can.

Worked in IT for 3 months (that's all I could handle). Management wants to know where you are and what you're working on every second of the day.
Pros
Free bus pass
Cons
Management is horrible. IT infrastructure is outdated.

COTA is a great employer, just wished they compensated based on experience and talent, instead of how someone felt about how much compensation another deserved.

Not a bad place to work if you don't have a life
Bus Operator (Current Employee) –  Columbus, OHOctober 19, 2014
There are many changes that you must go through on a regular basis.... sometimes a daily basis. The irregularity in the schedule is my chief complaint. It's hard to maintain regularity in life at COTA. Driving the bus is ok, but passengers can be difficult to deal with at times. Compensation isn't bad, but could also be better.
Pros
Decent money and benefits
Cons
Ridiculous, irregular schedules

Motor Coach Operator (Current Employee) –  Columbus, OHOctober 18, 2015
My time spent with COTA has been a blessing. I was graced with the opportunity and privilege to work with such seasoned & talented bus operators. Their input on how to improve quality performance was the difference from all other job experiences I have in the past. It has its share of hardships and difficulties, but the end result is both positive & encouraging.
Pros
Pool table, Graduation ceremony for new drivers, Performance based incentives just initiated
Cons
Difficult work schedule to start, Communication breakdown between operators & faculty staff

Bus Operator/Customer Service (Former Employee) –  Columbus, OHNovember 29, 2012
this job is great for a great supportive family or single person with no young children that needs caring for. You may get lucky to get steady work. The work flow is not consistent but the pay is good. The extra board workers gets the benefit of having overtime and getting to know all of the routes better. Co-workers are fun and the Management is strict on safety and timing. I loved meeting new people and talking to them on a regular on my consistent routes. My favorite route was the crosstown 92 and the several of the express routes were fun and full of nice people.
Pros
union, driving, knowing the city better, long breaks, sleep time
Cons
short breaks, 8 hour runs, being followed by a supervisor

I learned how to track and audit routes how to use outlook how to lead meeting and how to investigate.
My co-workers worked hard to keep services on time as well.
Hardest part of the job is keeping your customers motivated whether interior or exterior.
