About CertainTeed

There's no uncertainty about CertainTeed's business. A subsidiary of French industrial giant Compagnie de Saint-Gobain, CertainTeed manufactures building products for both commercial and residential construction. CertainTeed's products include fiberglass insulation, asphalt roofing shingles, gypsum wallboard, windows, fiber cement siding, foundations, – more... fencing, pipes, PVC trim, and composite decking and railing. The company sells its products under the Bufftech, CertainTeed, Form-A-Drain, Prestige, and Wolverine brands. CertainTeed operates some 65 manufacturing plants in the US and Canada.

The economic downturn and the languishing construction industry impacted CertainTeed as demand for its products declined in 2008 and 2009. In efforts to cut costs and balance production the company closed several plants and consolidated others. One example came in 2009 when the company consolidated its Meridian, Mississippi acoustical ceiling operations with its plant in L'Anse, Michigan in 2009, after Michigan officials approved a $3 million tax credit for the company. CertainTeed said it planned to invest some $7 million to expand the L'Anse facility.

The financial crisis also brought opportunities for CertainTeed. In 2008 the company expanded in Canada when it bought two fiberglass insulation manufacturing facilities and a ceiling tile plant.

CertainTeed is looking toward the future as the economy begins to rebound. The company is busy creating new products, especially energy efficient ones. Solar roofing products hold a specific interest for CertainTeed. In 2009 the company teamed with SRS Energy to develop photovoltaic roofing tiles. CertainTeed also partnered with Energy Conversion Devices to develop roof-integrated photovoltaics for residential and commercial buildings.

CertainTeed traces its roots to the founding of the General Roofing Manufacturing Company in 1904. About 10 years later, the company was renamed CertainTeed, its name formed by contracting the slogan, "Quality Made Certain, Satisfaction Guaranteed." – less
